KIA CARENS 1.7 CRDI 4 ECO AND THE SPORTAGE 2.0 CRDI KX-4 AUTO

sleek, seven-seat MPV is lower, longer and narrower than ever before with lots of room to spare on the inside. Being an impressive family car with reliable credentials, we showed off the Carens on our school run. Her pleasant profile sits well in the school traffic, with chrome polished trim and an impressive dynamism. The driving experience is competent while Kia offers the Carens with its Flex Steer system, which adjusts the weight according to which mode (Normal, Comfort or Sport) you select– although the changes in response are barely perceptible and not big enough to be a worthwhile addition. That’s partly because there’s not much steering wheel feedback, and while there’s plenty of grip and less body roll than most rivals in corners, you’d struggle to call the Carens exciting. On the plus side, the high driving position and tight turning circle, helped by clever parking aids lets Carens display some nifty parking skills. Just one thing, with a 493 litre boot capacity, even with all seats in use, you could find yourself the go-to picker-up just

once too often. Available from £17,295. The Kia Sportage struck a chord with us

this month. It offers decent practicality and very generous equipment levels in a mix of spaciousness, style, practical features and low cost of ownership. This is a stylish SUV with modern looks, a generous equipment

list and has solid build quality. Rugged, practical and versatile, the Sportage is what the estate car always wanted to be. The smartly-styled Kia Sportage gives you 4x4 looks and a long warranty for a relatively affordable price. Bold, sharp-edged styling combines with a smart interior to give it an appeal its bland predecessor never had. And it also has competitive pricing and a seven-year warranty on its side. From inside, the Sportage feels more like a generously proportioned hatchback than its chunky exterior dimensions might lead you to expect. The driver and passenger have plenty of space, but in the rear it’s not very roomy. Dark trim materials combine with the darkened privacy glass that’s fitted to 2- spec models and above to make the Sportage feel a bit claustrophobic, too. And only two people can ride in the back comfortably, due to a central rear seat that’s raised and narrow. The boot is far more impressive because it can easily swallow large suitcases, while a large opening helps with loading. Storage space in the front includes large door bins, a deep, lidded compartment in the centre console and a glovebox that’s usefully sized and shaped. It’s even chilled via the air- conditioning on most versions. There’s no doubt that even five years since it was launched, the Sportage really stands out in the mid-sized crossover class.
