BIG SPLASH Newport city centre, Sat 23 + Sun 24 July Admission: FREE.

art newportlive.co.uk/bigsplash

The latest invitation to party like it’s 2019 comes from Big Splash, an eclectic and cheerful weekend of accessible street theatre and related jolliness in Newport. Programmed by the city’s flagship arts centre the Riverfront, performances will be taking place at that venue and just about everywhere else in town. As well as the noted al fresco entertainment, Le Public Space will host a day of live music (Jack Perrett, interviewed elsewhere in this issue, is one confirmed act).

With family-friendliness the order of the day(s) at Big Splash, highlights confirmed so far include a new show, How To Defeat Monsters (And Get Away With It), by the edutaining duo Flossy & Boo; the commendably titled Falconry Dismay, a trio who comprise two people dressed as birds of prey and a handler; Roo’d, a bevy of kangaroo-suited performers who bounce around (expected) on stilts (less so); and Able Mable, whose act is a sort of pratfalling parody of escapology and magic.
