Pupil diary Pupil diary Monday
Elizabeth Wareing is a talented swimmer, runner and triathlete and a year 10 pupil at Lancaster. Girls’ Grammar School. In 2019, she was part of the LGGS team of three girls who won gold in the British Schools’ Biathlon Championships at Crystal Palace. training.
My week begins fairly quietly with a strength and conditioning session at my athletics club, Lancaster and Morecambe AC. Through the winter this will be a virtual session because we do not have access to the clubhouse due to covid restrictions. This is our last session at the track. We do a mixture of leg, core and general fitness work.
Tuesday
I have GCSE PE at school and we do the bleep test and the Cooper 12 minute run test. This evening I have a tough swim set at my swim club Preston SC. I’m so glad to be back training in a pool. We have fewer training hours than before covid because one of the pools we used has not reopened but we’re lucky that my squad has five sessions per week. I was really pleased because tonight I did my best-ever training time for 100m breaststroke.
Wednesday
Now that we don’t really have any competitions at weekends and we have training instead, Wednesday has become my rest day. I just do some rolling and stretching and general light recovery work. I used to enjoy doing a sports club every lunchtime at school but we can’t do those anymore because lunchtimes are much shorter. It means we get home earlier though so I get more time to fit in my homework around my
Thursday
Up at 4.15am for a two-hour swim set in Preston. It’s a very hard one - 36x100m, IM and freestyle. Then a maths test at school. It’s LMAC at the track this evening. Physical testing so our coaches can plan for the winter training sessions. We were very lucky during lockdown. We had four sessions of athletics a week which really improved my running. I did a massive PB for 1500m at a covid secure athletics meet at Trafford AC in September.
Friday
The NW Tri Academy have a virtual S&C session from 6.45- 7.30am. Although we’ve not been able to train as a group since before lockdown, our coach Katie has kept us all going with virtual S&C, turbo and yoga sessions. British Triathlon ran three covid secure Tri Race days at Mallory Park in the summer. It was brilliant to be able to compete with all the other regional tri academies. When I get home from school I go on a training ride with my dad. We see a beautiful sunset over the Lake District hills as we descend from Jubilee Tower.
Saturday
No athletics this morning so I go for a steady 7k run with my mum and dad and our cocker spaniel Lyvvie. Next Saturday my athletics coaches are starting a cross country league for our
squad. That should be great fun. This afternoon it’s swim training again in Preston – a kick set.
Sunday
5.15am wake-up for a two hour swim set in Preston. Butterfly! We have a catch-up zoom call with the NW Tri Academy to see
how our training and motivation are going. It can be hard to stay motivated when there are no competitions on the horizon, but I want to be in great shape for when they finally start again. I’m looking forward to posting some times for Swim England’s Level X Racing.
