Penalty drama seals title for Hodgson

It’s rare that a player notches four goals in a game only to end up on the losing side.

But that’s exactly what happened to Shenfield High School’s Elise Jennings in the final of the ESFA’s U14 girls cup.

Elise hit four goals, including an equalizer with just seconds to go, as her Essex team took the game to a penalty shoot-out against Blackpool’s Hodgson Academy

But it was the Lancashire side that held their nerve as they ran out 5-4 winners and prevented Shenfield regaining the title they won as U13s.

Beth Strutton hit two goals for Hodgson with Emma Siddall and Madison Sleet-Moreano notching one each while Bella Hill struck the winning spot kick – much to the delight of team coach Jasmine Sanderson.

She said: “We are hugely proud of the girls. Their success in the final marked the end of a thrilling journey for the team, which began a year ago before being interrupted by Covid-19.”

Hodgson’s triumph was just one of a series of finals laid on at Lilleshall National Sports Centre by the English Schools Football Association, who were determined to complete the 2019/20 season in style.

And down but not downhearted 14 SCHOOL SPORT Issue No.81 January/February/March 2021

Shenfield may be without a partnership with a professional football club – but it didn’t stop the Essex school going one step better in the U13 elite boys’ competition.

It was way back in March that Shenfield won their semi-final with a superb 3–1 victory against Northampton School for Boys.

And in the final they were up against Sandwell Academy, who defeated their Essex opponents in last season’s final 3-0.
