Mixing metaphors is often the first sign of confused thinking - but in these coronavirus times I ask for your forgiveness.
After two terms and nine months that have driven a Covid wrecking ball through organised games and sport, 2021 will hopefully see a level of long-overdue normality return to playing fields and sports halls.
It’s definitely true to say then that, although we may not be out of the woods yet, there is light at the end of the tunnel that will be welcomed by schools, teachers and pupils all over the country.
Yes it may not happen completely this term. But by Easter time, and certainly by the summer, we should see fixtures and competitions fill the hearts and minds of everyone that loves competitive sport.
It will be a while until the full repercussions of the lack of physical activity among our young is revealed. But at least we can look forward to better times rather than wallow in a stagnant present.
It’s also safe to say that producing a magazine and website that centres on sport in schools has never been more challenging when those two essential ingredients are somewhat lacking.
Fortunately, the sheer effort and innovation shown by teachers and schools throughout these trying times have made our work much easier.
Our first edition of another new year takes a look at how individual sports such as football, rugby, netball and athletics have coped with the virus and how they are looking ahead to 2021.
We also examine how other sports such as table tennis and rounders are offering exciting new programmes for pupils and teachers.
In a change to previous years, we also reveal the top 200 sports schools of 2020 with both independent and state schools included in the same list for the first time.
While some competitions were cancelled which may have adversely affected certain schools, the table is still based on more than 100 national tournaments in a range of sports. The results make fascinating reading.
Elsewhere in a special feature, we look at how the dual games of rugby union and rugby league are thriving side by side in some schools.
We also look at teachers who love coaching the D team and why inclusive competitive sport is important in schools.
Neil Rollings looks back on a uniquely unusual term, Gordon MacLelland gives advice on how to help children navigate their return to organized games and Robin Thomas welcomes a return to the headaches that organizing sport brings.
Here’s to a brighter and better 2021. Stay safe. Phil Tusler Publishing Editor
