Diary A LIFE IN THE A life in the week of Matthew Campbell, head of PE at Wade Deacon High School in Cheshire Monday
The week starts with a 5.30am get up with my 13-month-old daughter Summer who loves to wake up ridiculously early and begin playing with and banging everything in sight. After playtime is over and a quick shower, I head to school for 7.15am to get a head start on the day and week ahead. It is going to be a big week with our year 11 football team competing in the ESFA National Cup Final tomorrow at Lilleshall. We are very lucky to be playing the game with the pandemic situation and also that our area is due to be going into tier 3 restrictions on Wednesday. After getting into my office and arranging and printing all the resources for my four theory lessons of the day covering GCSE PE and OCR Sport Studies to year 10 and year 11 students in the four different rooms across the school, I make sure I speak to all of my amazing team before registration. A form period with the lovely 10CMB discussing how England beat Belgium on Sunday leads me into four theory lessons where I deliver topics ranging from planes, levers and axis, leadership styles and the positive effects of media coverage in sport. At the end of the day, our last training session with the year 11 football team finalises our preparation for the biggest game in the school’s history. The lads are ready, the game plan is well-trained and everyone is looking forward to the game against Ivybridge from Plymouth.
Tuesday
It’s my turn for a ‘lie in’ until 6.30am as my amazing wife Helen is on Summer duty this morning. I check my bag for the 1000th time and make sure I have everything I need for the day ahead and the 25 different scenarios I have planned in my head for the national final. I have a year 8 basketball lesson first thing before we set off to Lilleshall.

After washing down all the basketballs, putting the bibs in the wash and wiping down the cones, I meet the year 11 team at the changing rooms and the excitement is evident. Due to the pandemic, parents are not able to come and watch the game at Lilleshall which is such a shame as they have followed us all over the country and paid for the transport on many occasions due to the financial impact of competing in lots of competitions stretching our budget greatly. After the tradition of the coach driver getting lost, awful singing from the boys and recapping the game plan again, we arrive at the venue. The game is being shown live on YouTube and it is brilliant to hear that many of the students and teachers back at school will be tuning into the match. The game kicks off and we start really well. How we don’t go into half time at least 3-0 up baffles me. Instead it’s 0-0. Ivybridge change their formation in the second half which we don’t expect and I must admit they are
