West Midlands AFT workshop John Burnham

The use of humour in systemic practice 9.30am-4.30pm, 8th November 2019

Venue: SAFS Windmill Community Centre, Messenger Road, Cape Hill, Smethwick, B66 3DX

John Burnham is an esteemed systemic trainer, clinician, author and supervisor.

It’s said that ‘laughter is the best medicine’ and there are a number of studies and anecdotal evidence that humour can be useful in professional practice across a range of contexts. It may also be experienced as disrespectful and humiliating. This workshop will explore humour from a number of different perspectives and how it can be useful in the process of engagement, the promotion of change and the maintenance of well being.

The workshop will include talk, video and role play and small group discussions.

During the workshop we will explore issues/questions such as: • The difference between jokes and humour • Client initiated humour compared to practitioner-initiated humour • Planned humour compared to spontaneous humour • Can practitioners be trained to use humour?

We will look to create guidelines, hints and tips towards how humour can continue to be a part of your practice.

In preparing to attend the workshop it would be helpful if participants could think about the meaning and place of humour in their own lives, personally and professionally. It would also be useful if you could ask a few of your clients if they have experienced when humour has been part of their relationship with professionals in a helpful/unhelpful way.

Cost: £25 for students, £40 for AFT members, £45 for non-AFT members Please email Judy Sutton to request a place: judyasutton@hotmail.com Certificates of attendance will be emailed after the event.

Manchester Association for Family Therapy presents a one-day

workshop, on Tuesday, 3rd September 2019, 10am-4pm (registration from 9.30am) with Gary Robinson on

Non-violent resistance (NVR) and systemic therapy, thinking and practice

at The Curve, Prestwich Hospital (Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust) Bury New Road, Prestwich M25 3BL

Only 10 places left. Don’t miss out!

Fees for the workshop: AFT members £65, non AFT members £70, students and OAPs £60

This one-day workshop will introduce and illustrate systemic thinking and practice in relation to non-violent resistance. NVR has a growing international evidence base demonstrating applicability for and success in supporting families in relation to children and adults who present aggressive and violent behaviours. This includes work with autistic spectrum (ASD) and attention deficit (ADHD) difficulties, offending behaviours, substance-misuse concerns and self-harm issues.

The day will feature an introduction to NVR, followed by case presentations and experiential exercises, exploring innovative and creative NVR practices. There will be an emphasis upon how families have experienced the approach and how NVR has influenced their lives. This will include presenting the results of a Pilot Project utilising NVR within a CAMHS service in partnership with social services, through individual casework, live family team work and parent group work.
