Diversity, equality and social inclusion committee (DEI)
Chair: Pat Gray Members of committee: Alastair Pearson, Pat Gray, Elaine McGoldrick, Charity Tawodzera, Victoria Sharman, Amanda Middleton and Shelina Khan Retiring members during the year: None
Review of activities over the past 12 months This past year there have been some changes to the
committee membership. We have had three new members join the committee, Amanda Middleton, Shelina Khan and Elaine McGoldrick. These changes have brought a new energy within the committee for addressing issues of diversity, equality and social inclusion (DEI). The impact of the current political arena (Brexit and
government) we recognise will bring many challenges for families we work with, existing services and inevitably for many of the membership in the workplace, on a personal as well as professional level. Issues of diversity, equity and social inclusion could not be more important and we would like it to be high on the AFT membership agenda. Our main aim is to bridge the gap of
these issues with the membership and practice. Below is a snapshot of our current activities and plans we are prioritising: • Hold joint meetings with ethics committee • Contribute to the AFT annual conference planning • Considering the visibility of DEI activities • Considered gender, sexuality and diversity issues • Developing DEI membership and roles • Write-ups for Context • Reviews of Google-group usage and membership Over the next 12 months we are planning to: • Review priorities for 2019/2020 • Develop information on what is DEI and what it means for AFT • Increase DEI visibility through getting more involved in AFT committees (branch, CRED, ethics and professional aff airs committee) and UKCP activities • Run workshops on relevant issues through links with Wiley website for support for online training courses (CPD) • Review of DEI issues on training courses • Developing podcasts for AFT website We endeavour to be accessible to all members of AFT and open
to feedback and any suggestions in the work of DEI issues. We have vacancies and welcome any expressed interest from members, particularly trainees, who want to join our committee to support our activities. If you would like to join the DEI committee or bring any issues to our attention please contact us. We really welcome your interest and comments. As a committee we have bi-monthly telephone meetings that
last for one hour (8-9pm). We also have one face-to-face meeting a year. As always, we are thankful to AFT for their continued support and encouragement in all our activities.

Following our more detailed feedback in June’s Context, here is
a brief update. We have commit ee meetings every six to eight weeks. Due to
most of us being in diff erent parts of the country these are mainly tele-meetings and some face to face. We are having our AGM on 28th September, venue to be confi rmed. Our close links with the Family T erapy Training Network continue; Sam Petrie and Roy Farquharson presented an inspiring workshop on ‘Multiple layers of the trainee family therapist’ at FT N’s recent CPD day in June. Continuing the tagline for our branch ‘promoting family
therapy in Scotland,’ we are looking forward to developing more peer-group-supervision opportunities following the numbers of accredited systemic supervisors in Scotland which are about to increase; well done to everyone!
