UKCP College of Family Couple and Systemic Therapy News Briefi ng note: Family and Systemic

Psychotherapist SETs 2020 (UKCP) 1. Background T e origin of the new Standards of

Education and Training (SET) lies in the changes to titles that were reached with the Professional Standards Authority. UKCP now recognises the new title of Family and

Context 169, June 2020

Systemic Psychotherapist. While it’s not a protected title, it does mean we can shape our identity within UKCP and in our work-related worlds more authoritatively. As a result of that decision, UKCP

needed to develop the training standards that would support it. T e Education and Training and Practice Commit ee commissioned the College of Family, Couples and Systemic T erapy to prepare draſt SETs for consultation. T e closing date for submissions has

just closed, and we are most grateful to all those who contributed their thoughts and comments. We have tried to incorporate many of these, as they helped us clarify issues, address some key gaps, and refl ect on our own positions. It may seem as if the work was

undertaken by UKCP. We thought it helpful to all concerned if we clarifi ed who was involved. T e college formed a working group

at the end of 2018, which comprised members from • T e college (chair) • AFT • Training institutions • Previous trainers And relied on a wider reference group of

representatives of AFT consisting of: • T e training review group • T e college and its ethics commit ee • Confet i • T e Institute of Family T erapy • Chairs of AFT Scotland and Northern Ireland T ough these SETs will be endorsed by

UKCP, and be submit ed by the education, training and practice commit ee, the work involved in their preparation has been undertaken solely by family and systemic psychotherapists who are members of UKCP, the college and of AFT. It has been the intention of the working

group to ensure that the distinctive voice of systemic psychotherapy is properly integrated into the training standards. We believe we have not fundamentally altered any of the current regulatory framework set out in the Blue Book, but ensured we meet our particular professional requirements. We have worked to remain within the UKCP framework, but to ensure that the content properly refl ects our modality.

Rory Worthington, chair (SETs working group)

Institute of Family Therapy news

While the institute’s relocation to

new premises in Great Tower Street in the City of London is temporarily postponed, they are still making exciting plans for when they are able to move in. They will be creating a space for supporters past and present to be named on the walls, and hope this will tell a real story of its past as well as the future they are looking forward to. The institute have ensured that the

academic elements of their courses (foundation, intermediate, MSc, and supervision) have carried on through virtual means without interruption, and they continue to deliver professional development through virtual means at reduced rates (please see the events calendar on the AFT website for details). Trainees have been offered regular

groups for support and ref lection that they are using well, which has allowed staff to remain connected outside of their academic conversations, and understand what they are facing in their work contexts. The institute has made an offer of

support to all agency partners for their staff, and this has been well received and is a way that it can be helpful, aside from formal training. Institute tutor, Lucy Robertson-Ritchie, has established a system for responding should front line workers need support in these stressful times. The institute is part of Help for Front Line Workers and requests for support can be made directly here: helpforfrontlineworkers@gmail.com.
