aware of the pressures facing small abattoirs and also at St Georges House Windsor in a two-day conference with my colleagues William Lloyd Williams (NCB) and Richard Young (SFT). Similarly, at the Oxford Real farming Conference in January where I took part in a debate about the future of small abattoirs and local meat. I am confident that Government is listening to our concerns surrounding small abattoirs and I am hopeful that the ongoing work undertaken by NCB and the SFT will secure a future for these businesses. Currently, officials in DEFRA and the FSA are engaged in identifying how they can provide support for small abattoirs and working hard to find solutions to the problems they face. Looking ahead I hope to continue working with these organisations on behalf of NCB members as

a member of your Executive Council.

Whilst I have enjoyed being President and appreciate all the support, I am concerned that we are losing members. Some through retirement as shops close but sadly some through apathy and also I think a lack of understanding about what staff and executive members do on behalf of NCB members.

The NCB is much more than an office with partner services. For the NCB to have a voice with Government defending the interests of the independent butcher we need to maintain member numbers and better still expand those numbers. Unfortunately, it is impossible for me through a blog or at the events I attend to convey to every butcher why they should join NCB, but butchers do like to talk

to other butchers. So, I am therefore reaching out to you as NCB members and asking, when in discussion with other butchers who are not NCB members that you promote the benefits of membership, the vital role NCB plays in representing independent butchers and persuade others to join. The independent butcher whether in a high street or farm shop needs a voice - the NCB is that voice!

Remember, every day of the week NCB is encouraging the development of young butchers, defending the trade, engaging with Government

departments and providing members with invaluable help in running their businesses. I personally value that service and I am sure you do too. So together let’s spread the word. Our strength is in working together for the good of all.

I thank you for sharing my thoughts over the months – here’s to a busy summer for us all!

Meanwhile I look forward to seeing members at the Members' Day on 30th June.
