ESSEX BUTCHERY APPRENTICE BECOMES 100TH END POINT ASSESSMENT SUCCESS FOR AWARDING BODY


Owen Smith (18), apprentice with Ansell and Sons family butchers, has become the hundredth candidate to achieve success at end-point assessment for food awarding body, FDQ.

After realising ‘A’ levels were not for him Owen joined Ansell and Sons as an apprentice butcher. Ansells quickly enrolled him on the Butcher Standard Apprenticeship with MEAT Ipswich. Owner of Ansell and Sons, Paul Raymond, said the apprenticeship gave Owen ‘a sound fundamental start’ in the industry and that, ‘As a small local business we are strong advocates of training younger people to become part of the industry. from the past and the more that take part the better it will become.’


Owen is now a valued full- time member of staff who says he’s still learning every day and loves interacting with all the customers who visit the shop.


End-point assessment marks one of the biggest changes to all apprenticeships, not just butchery. A core premise of the new butcher standard apprenticeship is that apprentices are now required to prove their skills at an assessment which takes place at the end of their apprenticeship.

Also the majority of the ‘Top 20’ are household names in the awarding sector, delivering end-point assessment across a multitude of apprenticeships.


Increased funding available for apprenticeships


There has never been a better time for employers to take on apprentices. From 1st April this year the Government increased its funding of apprenticeship training from 90% to 95%, meaning employers now only need to contribute 5% towards the cost of training. Where apprentices are between 16-18 years of age and/or are in

receipt of a local authority care plan all their training costs will be funded.
