THE GREAT BRITISH BUTCHERS AWARDS REVEAL ‘MAGNIFICENT ELEVEN’ WINNERS


The overall winners of this year’s Great British Butchers Awards have been announced, in a celebration of the retail butchery industry attended by over 100 butchers.


Eleven butchers showed they are superstars when it comes to producing the best British meat products, scooping a Golden Cleaver Award as overall winner in their respective category, from traditional sausages, to ready meals and kitchen ready products.


The honours were announced recently at The Great British Butchers Awards Ceremony, held at the Dalziel Harrogate Butchers Show, Great Yorkshire Showground.


Out of 470 entries received across eleven ‘Best British’ meat product categories, eleven products were awarded overall Golden Cleaver Awards, 144 were awarded a Gold accolade, 177 were awarded Silver awards and 55 received Bronze awards.


As a special award, Mainsgill Farmshop of Richmond was named Britain’s Best Butcher 2019 for their kitchen ready product, which was praised by judges as the very best out of the 470 entries.

competition aims to celebrate innovation and excellence of meat products in retail butchers’ shops.


Judges were impressed with outstanding quality and taste, and how well products were made.


Dalziel’s Danny Upson said: “We had a fantastic response to the Awards with entries coming from over 100 butchers all over Britain, from Exeter to Aberdeen.


“With these Awards, we aim to put the passion back into the retail butcher industry, by sharing ideas and inspiring butchers to generate more sales.


“This year’s GBB Awards was peppered with some truly unique and innovative products and the standard

of entries was excellent. We congratulate all our winners on their outstanding success.


Expert judges included chefs, meat consumer fans, industry experts and food technologists.


Keith Fisher, chief executive of The Institute of Meat and head judge of the Great British Butchers Awards, said: “As an organisation with the passion to drive standards in the retail butchery industry, being a winner is a great accolade and winning a ‘Best British’ title is a massive achievement.”


Dalziel’s flagship Butchers Show, Harrogate saw one of the UK’s biggest gatherings of independent retail butchers.

Show highlights also included Team GB in action v Team Ireland in a new ‘Ready, Steady, Cut… Butchery Challenge’ as they prepare for the World Butchers Challenge 2020 in Sacramento,


And there were the British heats to determine which young butchers will compete in the finals of the World Champion Butcher Apprentice and Young Butcher competitions at WBC 2020.


As a dedicated trade show for the retail butchery sector, the event showcased the very latest products and innovations from leading suppliers and manufacturers with over 35 trade exhibitors.


The show’s aim is to inspire butchers with new and exciting ideas, explained Danny Upson.


“Our aim is to create the ultimate experience for butchers to help them drive their business forward against a very challenging market, where they’re competing against major multiples. This is the place to be for independent retail butchers who want to stay ahead of the game.” n
