SMALL ABATTOIRS GOVE LOOKS TO SUPPORT LOCAL ABATTOIRS


Michael Gove, the Environment Secretary, has written to Ruth George MP following her attempts to add “micro-abattoirs” to the list of premises for which the government can pay financial assistance.


Ruth George is MP for High Peak, the constituency where NCB President John Mettrick lives and has his business. John has successfully lobbied Ruth George and she has been a stalwart in supporting


our campaign to save small slaughterhouses.


Gove was non-committal in his letter on the financial assistance aspect. However, he did confirm that he and the government are working closely with stakeholders like NCB to explore the underlying issues.


He said, “I agree that we need to think hard about how we approach the decline in the numbers of small abattoirs and


can assure you that my officials are looking into this issue at pace.


Our aim is to gather as much information as we can to adequately address stakeholder concerns before seeking to introduce legislation and I hope we can continue to work together on this issue in order to ensure small abattoirs are able to operate effectively.”

but we can assure all craft butchers that we will continue to work with government officials and push them as hard as we can. It is very gratifying that Michael Gove has now gone on record and confirmed he is trying to assist.


I am very grateful to NCB members for all their support over the last few months especially our slaughtering members who have been asked for help often at short notice. The information and data they have supplied has been invaluable in helping us to build a case for Government support. n
