SOURCES A new trial conducted using modern broiler genetics has confirmed that the bioavailability of methionine from liquid hydroxy analogue (MHA-FA) products is only about 65%, compared to DL-methionine (DLM) products such as MetAMINO®


. This definitive finding is


consistent with the recent scientific opinion of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and will help producers optimize feed costs. The study was conducted at Schothorst


Feed Research in the Netherlands and showed that the relative bioavailability of MH-FA and DLM65 compared to MetAMINO® was 65% and 61% respectively. All the bioavailability estimates for MHA-FA were significantly lower than 88%, which is the active substance content. Although DL-methionine products are


PLANT Unibio and its partner and licensee Protelux are about to make signifcant forward progress in the production of alternative proteins from bacteria using methane as feedstock. During July Protelux completed the construction of the plant located in Russia and the parties are currently testing the plant and expect to commission it by late 2018. In May 2016 Unibio signed a license


agreement with the intent to upscale and commercialise the Unibio U-loop technology in Russia allowing the conversion of methane into protein. Protelux have also already reserved land for the future expansion with their aim being to reach in excess of 100,000 tonnes of production per annum.

BIOCHEM FRANCE CONDUCTS SEMINAR ON THE INFLUENCES OF PIGLET MICROBIOTA AND


PERFORMANCE The French Division of Biochem recently hosted a seminar in La Chapelle sur ERDRE close to Nantes. The seminar highlighted the importance of weaned piglet microbiota and ways to improve it in young pigs. Gilles Langeoire, a renowned swine


nutritionist, was the moderator of the event. Antonia Schulte from Biochem’s Research & Development department presented the company’s effective solutions (BioPlus/ TechnoMos/TechnoYeast) to improve the performance during the first forty-five days of life. Biochem Technical Sales Manager for Scandinavia Ebbe Nielsen also presented at the seminar highlighting the constraints around antibiotic use and the application of Biochem solutions in Denmark. Kim Knudsen, a well-known Danish swine producer discussed his experience with combinations of pre- and probiotics and why he used them. “At Biochem, we are always looking

were fed starter (d0 to 11), grower (d11 to 28) and finisher (d28 to 35) diets with different methionine contents. Each group of 120 birds was given MetAMINO® (MetAMINO®


, MHA-FA or DLM65 diluted with starch to a Met


content of 65%) at five different levels (from 0.4 to 3.0g/kg). A basal group of 120 was given no additional methionine. Growth performance was evaluated for each phase and carcass evaluation carried out on day 35. The results showed that increasing levels of all three Met products (MetAMINO®


,


MHA-FA and DLM65) was associated with improved growth performance and carcass yields compared to the basal diet. The highest Met supplement (3.0g/kg) improved BWG (body weight gain) by 70, 67 and 70% and reduced FCR (feed conversion ratio) by 22, 22 and 23% with MetAMINO®


, MHA-FA and


DLM65 respectively. Similarly, carcass yield improved by 13, 11 and 13%, and breast meat yield (as a percentage of body weight) by 62, 60 and 63%, with MetAMINO®


, MHA-FA and


DLM65 respectively. Further statistical analysis of the data


showed that MHA-FA was only 58, 66 and 62% as efficacious as MetAMINO®


for BWG,


FCR and EPEF (European production efficiency factor) respectively.

their larvae to convert organic food waste into a high-protein alternative to fishmeal suitable for fish, poultry, pigs and pet food. Jason Drew, AgriProtein co-founder

BASF EXPANDS VITAMIN A PLANT BASF has started the expansion of its vitamin A plant at the company’s Ludwigshafen site. The new production building expands the existing vitamin A plant, which went into operation in 1970. In total, about 600 machines and devices, 4,000 pipelines and 5,000 measuring points will be integrated into the process control system until the planned commissioning at the end of 2020. With the expansion of the plant, first announced in 2016, BASF is increasing its annual capacity of pure vitamin A by 1,500 metric tons.
