breeding herd, dairy cow numbers were down by 8,000 or 0.4 per cent to 1,883,000 whilst the beef herd had dropped by 31,000 or 2.0 per cent to 1,558,000 head. For female cattle under a year old the dairy herd levels remained steady with a 0.1 per cent rise from a year previous to 543,000 head, on the other hand the beef herd fell by 8,000 or 0.8 per cent to 1,032,000. This pattern was reversed in female cattle aged between one and two years with the beef herd growing by 23,000 or 2.7 per cent from a year earlier to 921,000 whilst the dairy herd fell by 44,000 or 7.9 per cent to 522,000. An increase of 4,900 or 1.0 per cent was seen in total pig

industry. The unprecedented output of sheep feed is hardly surprising given the drought conditions experienced during the month but given the relatively small proportion of sheep feed produced in the country, this does not have a transformative effect on the results. Furthermore, the fact that all remaining sectors, bar other feed, surpassed their respective year earlier levels but did not attain record highs, suggests that weather was not the only factor in July’s record haul.

UK LIVESTOCK POPULATIONS The total cattle and calf population on the 1st

June 2018 had fallen by 113,000 or 1.1 per cent from a year earlier to 9,891,000 head. Of the

population, with the number of livestock rising to 5,018,000 head. The total sow population was down by 7,000 or 1.6 per cent to 410,000, however, this includes a 3,000 or 4.6 per cent increase of gilts in pig which marginally offset the fall in sows in pig and other sows. Finishing pig stocks increased to 4,514,000 head, a growth of 57,000 or 1.3 per cent from 2017 levels. The UK sheep and lamb flock fell to 34,302,000 in 2018, a drop

of 530,000 or 1.5 per cent from a year earlier. The female breeding flock was down 172,000 or 1.0 per cent overall to 16,497,000. The decrease being made up of a 42,000 head or 0.3 per cent drop in ewes for further breeding or slaughter to 13,720,000 and a 129,000 or 4.4 per cent fall in ewes intended for first time breeding to 2,778,000 head. Other sheep and lambs, at 17,805,000, had fallen by 358,000 or 2.0 per cent. Data for the poultry flock numbers for 2018 are expected to be released in December.
