Feed Production Update

By Ryan Mounsey

FIRST QUARTER OVERVIEW – GREAT BRITAIN Total production of compounds, blends and concentrates, including integrated poultry units, during the first quarter of 2019 amounted to 3,627,300 tonnes, 55,400 tonnes or 1.5 per cent less than the record 3,682,700 tonnes produced in quarter one of 2018. The current total is, however, the second largest on record and was a significant 153,400 tonnes or 4.4 per cent greater than the 10 year average for the timeframe. Total feed production during the first quarter of 2019 was made

up of: 42.1per cent poultry feed, 31.2 per cent cattle and calf feed, 12.9 per cent pig feed, 9.5 per cent sheep feed, 3.1 per cent other feed and 1.3 per cent horse feed. At 1,130,500 tonnes of output, first quarter cattle and calf feed had

dropped below the levels seen in the same period a year earlier, sitting 20,500 tonnes or 1.8 per cent lower than the 1,151,000 tonnes produced in 2018. The 10 year average for the quarter was still bettered by 25,600 tonnes or 2.3 per cent. Despite the overall drop witnessed in cattle and calf feed, both

compounds for dairy cows and protein concentrates for cattle and calfs grew from year previous levels, compounds for dairy cows increased by 9,900 tonnes or 1.9 per cent to reach 530,700 tonnes whilst protein concentrates for cattle and calves rose by 4,700 tonnes or 23.4 per cent to 24,800 tonnes. These were not, however, enough to make up for the shortfalls seen across the rest of the sector with blends for dairy cows dropping 9,600 tonnes or 3.9 per cent to 240,100 tonnes; all other cattle feed dropping 4,500 tonnes or 2.2 per cent to 200,100 tonnes; all other cattle blends dropping 5,800 tonnes or 6.2 per cent to 88,100 tonnes; and all calf feed dropping 15200 tonnes or 24.6 per cent to 46,700 tonnes. An increase of 11,600 tonnes or 2.5 per cent from Q1 2018 brought

pig feed production to 467,900 tonnes in the first quarter of 2019, the highest output for the timeframe since 2000. The current quarter also stood 10.0 per cent above the average of the last 10 first quarters, a difference of 42,600 tonnes.

Only link and early grower feed, whose total fell 2,900 tonnes or

12.0 per cent to 21,300 tonnes, did not surpass the output from a year previously. Protein concentrates for pigs increased by a substantial 63.2 per cent to 3,100 tonnes, a rise of 1,200 tonnes, whilst pig starters and creep feed advanced by 50.5 per cent or 4,700 tonnes to 14,00 tonnes of output. There was also significant growth displayed by both pig growing feed and pig breeding feed whose totals expanded by 8,100 tonnes or 10.0 per cent and by 5,300 tonnes or 5.2 per cent respectively, to 88,900 tonnes and 106,900 tonnes. Pig finishing feed was virtually unchanged, up just 100 tonnes to 223,880 tonnes of production. In spite of a 5,300 tonnes or 0.35 per cent drop from year previous

levels, the 1,527,100 tonnes of poultry feed manufactured during the first quarter of 2019 represented the second highest quarterly return on record. Therefore, it is unsurprising that the 10 year mean for the period under review, of 1,445,430, was comfortably surpassed by a total of 81,670 tonnes or 5.7 per cent. Q1 broiler chicken feed increased considerably from year earlier

output. The 570,500 tonnes produced was an all-time high and surpassed 2018’s first quarter returns by 47,300 tonnes or 9.0 per cent. Protein concentrates for poultry, at 2,700 tonnes, more than tripled from its 2018 output, growing by 1,900 tonnes or 237.5 per cent. Poultry breeding and rearing feed and all other poultry feed also outpaced year previous production, although by less impressive margins, doing so by 2,100 tonnes or 2.4 per cent to reach 88,300 tonnes and by 1,400 tonnes or 4.0 per cent to reach 36,600 tonnes respectively. These returns were not, however, enough to offset the losses primarily from the integrated poultry units sector which were at their lowest level on record. The 493,600 tonnes manufactured by IPUs during the quarter was a sizeable 44,400 tonnes or 8.2 per cent down on their 2018 output. Turkey feed also fell sharply by 8,500 tonnes or 31.3 per cent to reach 18,800 tonnes, another record low for the quarter and layer feed dropped by 4,000 tonnes or 1.4 per cent to 279,800 tonnes. Sheep feed dropped by a substantial 52,800 tonnes or 13.3 per

cent to 343,100 tonnes in the first quarter of 2019. The current quarter’s return also fell short of the 10 year average for the term, doing so by 20,100 tonnes, a difference of 5.5 per cent. The bulk of the decline was made up by a steep fall in the production

of compounds for breeding sheep. 2018’s first quarter output of 223,700 tonnes was 40,900 tonnes or 18.3 per cent above the 182,800 tonnes posted in the same period of 2019. An 11,400 tonnes or 8.3 per cent fall in compounds for growing and finishing sheep to 126,300 tonnes and a 1,900 tonnes or 9.4 per cent drop for blends for growing and finishing sheep to 18,300 tonnes were also seen from year previous outputs. In contrast, blends for breeding sheep grew 1,400 tonnes or 11.6 per cent to 13,500 tonnes whilst protein concentrates for sheep increased by 100 tonnes from Q1 2018 to bring its total to 2,200 tonnes. Total quarter one horse feed dropped to levels not seen since

1997. The 47,900 tonnes of production was 7,500 tonnes or 13.5 per cent lower than the output from the corresponding period a year earlier. As with sheep feed, total horse feed in Q1 2019 was below the 10 year average for the period of 52,200 tonnes, a shortfall of 4,300 tonnes or 8.2 per cent. By contrast, other feed output rose to unparalleled levels for the first quarter. Breaking the 100,000 tonnes mark for only the second
