were affected. The company are to be commended for their fast action,

with point-of-sale notices asking customers to return the product and explaining the problem displayed in retail outlets selling the product. Recently the growth in popularity of raw meat based diets (RMBD)

for pets has increased the risk of salmonella being transmitted to humans. In fact, recent scientific studies show that almost all RMBD (commercial or home-made) are contaminated with bacteria and salmonella contamination rates have been measured at between 20-48%. Unlike commercial feeds RMBD feeds are not heat treated and

the British Veterinary Association advise owners wanting to try a raw meat based diet to consult a vet, to be aware of the potential health risks and of the possibility of nutritional deficiencies in homemade diets.

The feed milling industry maintains strict regulatory control over

any form of salmonella contamination, with microbiological sampling and a strict code of practice. However, once something has left the mill it’s up to the retailer to maintain proper storage conditions, and in turn the pet owner or farmer. Salmonella and other problems such as mould leading to

mycotoxins on feed can be caused by poor storage, damp conditions, rodents or even birds. Sadly even the most descriptive labelling cannot always make up for the end users’ lack of common sense or a lax attitude to feed storage.
