Galácticos and Bianconeri set for a world-class croeso in sporting showpiece

Juventus and Real Madrid will do battle in Cardiff for the title of UEFA Champions League winner 2017. With the line up for the men’s UEFA Champions League Final now complete, Economy Secretary Ken Skates has outlined what two of the world’s biggest clubs can expect when they come to Wales in June. With around 170,000 additional visitors expected in Cardiff and an estimated global TV audience of 200 million across 200 countries and territories, few events can match the Champions League Final for size and scope. Cardiff is expected to be incredibly busy and alive with not only Spanish and Italian voices, but with people and languages from every corner of the globe, including an estimated 2,500 members of the media. A security operation befi tting the size of the event will also be in place, aimed at ensuring a safe and successful event for visitors and locals alike. Ken Skates said: “These are two clubs and cities who already have a rich footballing affi nity with Wales, sharing with us a love for footballing greats John Charles, Ian Rush, John Toshack and Gareth Bale, to name a few. “But for many fans, this will be their fi rst visit to Wales and they will fi nd a country ready and determined to deliver a well-organised and well-resourced event - a real celebration of football both inside and outside our capital city. The excitement across Wales is palpable. “Croeso. Welcome. Bienvenido. Benvenuto. We are ready and excited to host the biggest sporting event of the year and look forward to players and supporters of these two great clubs joining us for the sporting showpiece of 2017.” Thousands of extra seats are being provided on trains in and out of Cardiff on 3rd June as well as coaches and park and ride services to help the road network cope with the substantial extra traffi c expected. A dedicated website has been set up to provide detailed information for the public at www.cardiff2017.wales/ travel and we urge people to plan ahead to avoid undue disruption.

LETTER TO EDITOR

Dear Editor, SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, is the oldest, national tri-service military charity in the UK. Our experience over the past 130 years has shown us that the journey to ‘Civvy Street’ can be a diffi cult time for some ex-servicemen and women, in particular for those who have been wounded or injured. Their employment, living arrangements, fi nancial stability and personal lifestyles all change contemporaneously, as they move away from their support networks and try to acclimatise to their new life. SSAFA has a network of volunteer mentors who work to motivate, support and empower these veterans, helping them to adjust and fulfi l their potential during the transition period. Mentors provide both emotional and practical support, ranging from help with writing CVs and securing housing to encouraging new activities and hobbies in a bid to avoid social exclusion. SSAFA is in urgent need of more mentors specifi cally across Wales. We are looking for enthusiastic, dedicated local residents of all ages and backgrounds who have an hour or more to spare, once a week. Volunteering to become a mentor for a veteran can be incredibly rewarding, our Forces have protected us and had our backs, this is a real opportunity to give something back. SSAFA mentors have one mentee placed with them at any one time and the role involves a face to face session each week for up to a year. The charity provides a thorough and comprehensive training programme for all of its mentors, as well as ongoing support from its head offi ce team. If any of your readers are interested in fi nding out more details, they can visit www.ssafa.org.uk/mentors, call 0800 032 5612 or email mentoring@ssafa.org.uk

Yours faithfully, Gary Williams,

Head of Mentoring - SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, 4 St Dunstan’s Hill, London EC3R 8AD www.ssafa.org.uk
