Glamorgan Cricketers Unite Against Dementia

Community Fundraising Glamorgan and Alz Soc Cymru.

Alzheimer’s Society Cymru staff, supporters, volunteers and people affected by dementia marked this year’s Dementia Awareness Week by uniting against dementia with Glamorgan County Cricket Club. The squad met on Thursday 18 May, before the start of training for their match against Nottingham, to mark the Club’s commitment to become Dementia Friendly. The team at The SSE SWALEC, including Glamorgan players, Stadium staff, security and other partners, have committed to make as many Dementia Friends as possible over the next six months and are united against dementia this Dementia Awareness Week.

Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends programme is the biggest ever initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia. It aims to transform the way the nation thinks, talks and acts about the condition. A Dementia Friend learns a little bit more about what it’s like to live with dementia and then turns that understanding into action - anyone of any age can be a Dementia Friend. There are over 68,000 Dementia Friends in Wales. Glamorgan CCC Chief Executive Hugh Morris said; “Glamorgan CCC are pleased to partner with Alzheimer’s Society Cymru in supporting Dementia Awareness Week. Sport plays a crucial role in creating

memories for people of all walks of life and we’re committed to doing our part in becoming dementia friendly.

“As well as supporting the Sporting Memories Foundation, in partnership with the Health and Parks team at Cardiff Council we’ve recently set up a QR code walking route around the stadium. This new initiative will benefi t groups visiting The SSE SWALEC for the fi rst time as well as more regular visitors wishing to re-discover their memories of the venue and the team. Alzheimer’s Society Cymru do extremely valuable work in both providing support and helping research and together we’re united against dementia.” Cheryl George Regional

Shingler and Dollman called up to Wales squad

The Welsh Rugby Union have confi rmed that Aaron Shingler and Phil Dollman have been called up to the national squad for next month’s tour. Scarlets back row Shingler and uncapped Exeter Chiefs fullback Dollman will join up with the squad following this weekend, when their teams will feature in the Guinness PRO12 and Aviva Premiership fi nals respectively. The call-ups have been made in light of injuries to uncapped Cardiff Blues back Rhun Williams and Ospreys forward James King. “The two players coming in have been in excellent form lately and we’re looking for them to bring that level of performance with them,” says Wales head coach Robin McBryde. “They’ll be arriving with their tails up having made it to those fi nals, so it should be a boost for them as well as us.” Despite the disappointment of losing players to injury ahead of next week’s camp in North Wales - which will culminate in a Friday night match against RGC 1404 at a sold-out Parc Eirias - McBryde says he and his coaching team expect such setbacks as they prepare for Tests against Tonga (16th June) and Samoa (23rd June). “You have to account for injuries in this game - especially at this stage of the season - so we’re not shocked when these things happen. It’s a big blow for the players who are missing out, but for someone like Rhun, who’s only 19 years old, he’s got plenty of time to make his mark with Wales. “We’ve got a young squad, but we’re not treating this as a development tour. We’re going to the southern hemisphere to win two Tests, so the selection has to refl ect a balance between potential and performance, and the new players will have to reach the high levels of expectation we have of them.”
