WHAT’S ON in your local area?

Porthcawl locals will soon have nothing to ‘wine’ about as they are being called upon to come together on Sunday 25th June and clean Porthcawl Beach as part of the Barefoot Wine Beach Rescue Project - an initiative that encourages the British public to Leave Only Footprints on the UK’s beaches. The initiative kicks off its tenth year running in the UK and members of the public are invited to come down and join the beach clean from 2pm onwards, with everyone welcome. Adding a competitive element to the beach clean, a giant set of Barefoot Wine ‘Scales of Gra-TOE-tude’ will pop up on the beach, with the team that collects the largest amount of litter being awarded with a bottle of Barefoot Wine to toast their success. However, everyone will be a winner as not only will their local beach look FOOT-tastic, but all adult volunteers will be able to enjoy a glass of Barefoot Wine as a reward for their hard work. The project will run across the country throughout the summer in partnership with environmental charity, Surfers Against Sewage (SAS), who, for the last 27 years, have worked tirelessly to protect the UK’s oceans, waves, beaches and wildlife. Those keen to get involved are invited to join the clean on Porthcawl Beach - with friends and family from 2pm on Sunday 25th June, and can also join the conversation and share their hard work and successes on Twitter using #LeaveOnlyFootprints. Members of the public can register their interest and ask the Surfers Against Sewage team any specifi c questions via email at beachcleans@sas.org.uk. One in Four holidaying without travel insurance

More than one in four holidaymakers are taking the risk of taking trips away without paying for insurance, new research from insurance market experts Consumer Intelligence shows.

And it’s people going on short trips and city breaks who are the most likely to travel uninsured although substantial numbers say cover is too expensive, the study found.

Consumer Intelligence’s research shows 26% of people who have been on holiday in the past six months took the trip without insurance with the main reason for those going outside the UK being the belief they didn’t need cover for a short trip. Around a third (35%) said they took the risk because it was only a short trip while 14% say travel cover was too expensive and a quarter (25%) were happy to take the risk of not paying for insurance. Travel insurance has proved valuable for holidaymakers – around one in 12 (8%) who have gone overseas in the past two years have claimed on the policy.

But the numbers going abroad without cover could be set to fall – once the UK leaves the European Union. Around half (49%) of all holidaymakers say

they are more likely to buy travel insurance after Brexit. Price

data from Consumer Intelligence

average premiums for trips to Europe are currently £20 compared with £16 last year.

Consumer Intelligence’s data shows confusion over what insurance is needed – 25% of holidaymakers believe the free European Health Insurance Card is enough cover in the European Union despite explicit warnings that it is not an alternative to travel insurance.

The future of the EHIC – which allows holidaymakers to receive medical treatment for free or at reduced costs in EU and European Economic Area countries - is in doubt once the UK leaves by March 2019. John Blevins, Consumer Intelligence pricing expert, said: “Travel insurance has proved valuable for thousands of holidaymakers with one in 12 making claims in the past two years on their policies.” The research found 31% of holidaymakers use price comparison websites to buy insurance while 26% have travel insurance as part of a current account or credit card offer.
