The Potted Garden Roses
Hayfever Heroes How to survive spring with a pollen allergy
Having a perfumed garden in an excellent way of improving well-being and making your outside space feel even more special. Not often thought of as a container plant, but an excellent option for small gardens, is the ever popular scented rose. Roses are easy to grow and will thrive in most pots providing there is good drainage and they are watered regularly.
All you need is a sunny location
and enough room for a large container and you can transform a patio, terrace or balcony into a fl oral retreat full of colour and fragrance.
Choosing the right rose is important – compact varieties with a long fl owering season grow well in containers – they just need a sturdy, good sized pot to live in full of good quality potting compost. Roses need regular feeding which will increase the amount of blooms they produce and will also improve their resistance to pests, although some roses will require spraying to combat aphids and mildew. Pruning is essential as it shapes the plant and helps control insects and disease and it’s also important to remove dead heads as this improves fl owering over a longer period of time. You should re-pot every two to three years to refresh the soil and if your rose isn’t fl ower as much as it used to then transplant it to a larger container. If you are replacing old roses with new ones, ensure that all the old soil is removed and replaced with fresh. The Royal Horticultural Society’s top fi ve roses for containers are … Laura Ford – a patio climber that has lots of small, double, deep yellow fl owers and grows up to 3m high
Magic Carpet – a groundcover variety that has pretty, wide, semi-double fl owers in mauve, lilac and lavender with a light spicy scent. Nice Day – a patio climbing rose with gorgeously scented coral-pink fl owers that bloom repeatedly throughout the summer and autumn and grows to 2m high Robin Redbreast – a miniature rose with dark green foliage and bright red, single fl owers with yellow centres that produces good rosehips in the autumn. Sweet Dream – a past Rose of the Year short, standard bushy rose that has apricot-peach fl owers with masses of petals
For an instant rose garden that you can enjoy throughout the summer buy a selection of different sized pots, plant them with a varieties of roses and then place them together in a group. Simple but stunning.

More than 10 million Brits suffer from hay fever every year, making it one of the most common allergies in the UK. Severity of symptoms varies according to pollen count and weather, and the time of year your symptoms begin depends on the type of pollen you’re allergic to – keep an eye on the pollen forecast to make sure you’re ready to stop the sniffl es*. To ease common symptoms, such as itchy eyes, a runny nose and sneezing, Well’s expert pharmacists have provided their top 5 pollen-fi ghting tips to keep a spring in your step! 1) Keep your windows and doors closed as much as you can The pollen count is at its highest fi rst thing in the morning and last thing at night, so make sure you don’t sleep with your windows open. If you need some cooler air when the pollen count is high, try using an oscillating electric fan.
2) Don’t leave your washing to dry outside This is especially important for bedding! Leaving it to dry outside may be more economical but it quickly becomes covered with pollen naturally scattered in the breeze. With pollen on your clothes, towels and bed linen, there’ll be no respite for your skin or senses, so play it safe and hang washing indoors whenever possible. 3) Wear sunglasses outdoors Sunglasses aren’t just for keeping the rays at bay (or for channelling your inner rock star), they’re also a handy visor against wind which naturally distributes pollen. Combine this with a recommended anti- allergen product to keep irritation to a minimum. 4) Wash your hands, wash your hands, and wash your hands again! We’ve all experienced the pain of accidentally touching your eyes after cooking with chili – ouch. Well for hay fever sufferers, touching your face or rubbing your eyes can start a tirade of tears in the same way. Pollen gets onto everything during spring thanks to its distribution by the weather and insects, so make sure you wash your hands regularly to avoid transferring that pollen to your eyes and nose. 5) Be prepared There are a whole host of anti-allergen medicines and products available at your local pharmacy. It can be diffi cult to fi gure out which one will work best for you so here are our best picks to keep close at hand when the sun comes out to play…
If you’d like more advice on the best products to help you enjoy life during the pollen season, then your local Well pharmacist is available to discuss the right treatment for you.

Challenging all schoolchildren in Wales to become recycling heroes
New nationwide Home Recycling Challenge invites Welsh primary schools to encourage their pupils to become recycling heroes and help boost the nation’s recycling, whilst also being in with a chance to win prizes!
Launched by Recycle for Wales and Wastebuster, the Home Recycling Challenge will be delivered through schools to educate pupils about what can be recycled in their homes and the benefi ts of recycling. To kick start the fun, Welsh TV presenter Gethin Jones and children’s TV presenter Maddie Moate feature in an entertaining new video asking your school to take on the challenge, with the help of recycling expert Captain Busta, Wastebuster’s popular mascot. Wales is already ranked third in the world for recycling, but the Welsh Government is aiming higher, with an ambitious target to recycle 70% of our waste by 2025, and become a zero waste nation by 2050 – and Recycle for Wales and Captain Busta are here to help. By setting this Home Recycling Challenge we want to encourage the next generation to become avid recyclers! With each pupil receiving a handy take home worksheet to work out what can be recycled from around their home; they can become the recycling champion in their family by highlighting items their family is not recycling. Many items from around the home, such as aerosol cans, toothpaste boxes and shampoo bottles are often not recycled – but if everyone in Wales remembered to recycle all these items, it could help take Wales to the top of the world’s recycling leader- board! And that’s not all – recycling one more thing
20 - Friday 23rd June 2017 – Cardiff & South Wales Advertiser
could make a huge difference to the environment. In fact, if everyone in Wales recycled just one shampoo bottle, it would save enough energy to power a fi ve minute shower in 425 homes every day for a year. Not only is the Challenge a great way to keep kids busy over the summer holidays, there is also the opportunity to win some great prizes! The winning school will receive £1,000 cash and an assembly with Maddie Moate and Captain Busta. Children entering the poster competition can win prizes for their family ranging from eco-science packs and Captain Busta Top Trumps to an iPad. Angela Spiteri, from Recycle for Wales, said: “We know that many families are recycling but not all are clear on all the items they can recycle from all the rooms in the house. By challenging children to fi nd out about what they can recycle at home and by getting their families to recycle more, we want recycling to become the norm for the next generation.” The Cabinet Secretary for Environment and Rural Affairs, Lesley Griffi ths said: ”Wales is offi cially the best UK recycling nation and we need to encourage our younger generation if we want to achieve our goal of becoming a zero waste nation by 2050.” The competition will continue over the summer holidays and will close on Monday 25th September, during Recycle Week (25th Sept – 1st Oct). All winners
will be announced on Thursday 28th
September. To fi nd out more about the Challenge visit
