Charity calls for more support for carers in Cardiff

National poverty charity Turn2us is raising concerns about the need for more support for carers in Cardiff. The charity says that a signifi cant number of those in fi nancial hardship who are seeking its help are car- ers. Figures published last month by the Department of Work & Pensions have revealed that there are now 7,000 people in Cardiff who are receiving Carer’s Allowance.

Currently carers across the UK who provide support to people with a disability who are unable take care of themselves can get up to £62.70 a week Carer’s Allowance, providing they care for someone at least 35 hours per week. Carers are also eligible to receive a number of benefi ts, such as support with housing and income support. People can qualify for Carer’s Allowance whether they are in or out of work, but must not earn more than £116 a week. Carer’s Allowance does not de- pend on national insurance contributions and is not means-tested – in other words not based on your personal income or savings – but earnings may affect your entitlement. Carer’s Allowance usually counts in full as income when calculating your entitlement for means tested benefi ts. Calling for more support for carers, Simon Hopkins, Chief Executive of Turn2us, said: “We are contacted on a daily basis by those who are caring for some- one with a disability and who are struggling to make ends meet. “Too often carers are not aware of, and receiving, the help that they are eligible for and entitled to. Even when they are, many are fi nding it hard to cope with the fi nancial strain of being a carer. ” Turn2us is urging anyone who is caring for someone with a disability to seek its help at Turn2us.org.uk. It says that it can help carers understand and access the support that they are eligible for and entitled to.

Cardiff Universities End-of-Year student lifesaving revolution

Students from Cardiff Marrow are celebrating the end of the academic year, having recruited a remarkable 228 students to

the Anthony Nolan stem cell register since September. The

University of

Cardiff is one of over 50 universities with a ‘Marrow’ society, the name given to blood cancer charity Anthony Nolan’s network of student volunteer groups.

Since September, Cardiff Marrow has also raised over £350 towards the

lifesaving

work of Anthony Nolan, with events such as carol singing on Queen Street and a Variety Performance in the city centre.

The University of Cardiff adds to the more than 60 universities who have set up their own ‘Marrow’ society since 1997. For some people, receiving stem cells from a stranger is their only chance at life, so the work done by Cardiff

Marrow and Anthony Nolan is invaluable. Katherine Wooley, Cardiff Marrow President, said: ‘Cardiff Marrow has had a fantastic year meeting new and enthusiastic volunteers while trying to

build a

volunteer base and hear about students

stronger from

Cardiff that have gone on to further testing or to donate. It is for this reason that Marrow is so important that we sign up many people who are then able to go on to help someone in desperate need.’ Since 1997, Marrow groups have recruited over 100,000 potential donors and over 900 of these people have gone on to donate. Typically, around 1 in 1200 people

on the register go on to donate, so Marrow donors are up to 10 times more likely to save a life than average. Young people are the most likely to be chosen to

donate their stem

cells as they are less likely to have long-term health problems which might delay or prevent donation.

Charlotte Cunliffe, Marrow Programme Lead at Anthony Nolan,

said: “It’s hard to put into words just how amazing our Marrow volunteers are – they are responsible for saving the

lives of countless

people, and they are truly the unsung heroes helping to cure blood cancer and blood disorders.” You can fi nd out more about Marrow at www. anthonynolan.org/ marrow
