26-27 July • Chapter Arts Centre Well Thumbed •

Bootleg Cash - A Tribute to Jonny Cash • 19 July • Congress Theatre

The premise of the show is simple: once upon a time when you took a book from the shelf it always opened at the well-thumbed mucky bits! The Librarian is performed by Terry Victor in this libertine and ribald celebration of historically robust language and subject matter. Well Thumbed pages from the Bible to D.H. Lawrence by way of Jane Austen’s dirty bits will be riffled for your pleasure. Notional Theatre is delighted to present Well Thumbed at Chapter prior to its run at the Edinburgh Fringe 2017. These pre-Edinburgh fringe performances will be accompanied by an original Well Thumbed Authors exhibition by the artist Carl Chapple.

Physalis • Until 1 July • 76m2

“physalis” is a solo exhibition by Ukrainian photographer and camera maker, Alexey Shportun (who also published work under the name Alexey Ostrovskiy). Alexey is a photographer and graphic designer who lives and works in Irpin and Kiev. The exhibition presents a collection of Alexey’s still lifes, taken on an 18 by 13 cm camera that he built and using photographic paper instead of film; some of the images are projections created with his homemade camera and captured on a digital camera. Alexey also uses modified 35mm camera lenses, a magnifying glass and an Ortagoz (an old Russian lens) in his work. Alexey treats photography as a kind of ritual and contemplation, and it is the experience of setting the photo, the light and the process of working with paper that he enjoys the most. The still lifes he photographs are created in collaboration with his wife Katerina, who is a freelance artist.
