lot of help along the way, that’s for sure. I like the thought of striking out by myself, but my crew are always nearby.

“For me the purchase came at a time when I knew I had achieved most of what I wanted to in terms of career and music. I had been doing it a long time and, like most of us, you get to the point where you know you deserve some sort of reward.

“Obviously I thought about the money I had been fortunate to make through music and wanted to invest it in something that I had dreamt about owning for a long time. So, some friends agreed to come on board – no pun intended – and we all chipped in together and bought this lovely yacht. My wife then spent a couple of months down in the south of France repainting and refurbishing it and she did an amazing job with it. It’s been a big part of our family ever since and I can safely say I have no regrets.”

As The Edge alludes, partner Morleigh Steinberg has been central to the couple’s desire to make the Cyan a truly homely space out at sea. Built in 1997, it measures 140ft, has six cabins and accommodation for 12 guests. It has an on-deck jacuzzi, state-of-the-art music system, swimming platform, large dining area and a luxury bar, plus a baby grand piano and outdoor cinema.

Morleigh’s passion for renovation even stretched to planning a new external paint job, and the result is a splendid machine of power and precision created perfectly in the mould of Italian shipbuilder Codecasa Yachts. It works as an up-to-date escape for a family who cherish privacy, whilst also providing adequate space to entertain.

It can be privately chartered for about $200,000 per week and comes equipped with 21ft and 15ft power boats, a Yamaha deluxe WaveRunner and a two-person WaveRunner, two inflatable kayaks and a sailboard.

Whether The Edge can realistically kick back and enjoy the delights of the Cyan is another thing, however. His band’s popularity is seemingly unending and circumnavigates a cross-section of music lover the world over. Having broken new ground in Singapore, South Korea, the Philippines and India at the end of 2019, they put the final touches to their two-part Joshua Tree tour, which marked three decades since the release of a defining album that shifted 25 million copies worldwide.

In 2020 new music is expected to arrive, although for fans of the back catalogue, the launch of new digital station U2X Radio will offer back-to-back music from the band, 24/7. While the thirst for the Irish four- piece will, it seems, never dissipate, nor will The Edge’s desire to get back to Cyan.

“I think you take it for granted when you’re on the yacht,” he says. “It’s perhaps one of those things whereby you don’t know how much you miss the downtime until you’re out on the road and travelling all over. For me, it’s about knowing I will be heading back again soon for those special moments with family – that’s all I really need.”

For me the purchase came at a time when I knew I had achieved most of what I

wanted to in terms of career and music.
