f you’re seeking glamour in the superyacht industry, don’t look
below the waterline. While luxury carpets and rare woods might abound inside the vessel, underwater the same rules apply to superyachts as they do to all marine vessels and installations, from keelboats to supertankers and oil rigs.
Barnacles are no respecters of budgets, and that’s why Ewan Clark, one of the founding directors of Coppercoat, is more likely to be found in a humble office in Shillingstone, Dorset, than strolling the pontoons in Monaco. From there, he manages a widespread customer base which ranges from the smallest weekend boats to the largest yachts, and increasingly a diversity of commercial applications including wind turbines and oil rigs. The office is built on the site of an old railway goods yard, and just beyond the fence a preservation society is hard at work bringing a section of the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway back to life.

DAY TO DAY Ewan’s day typically starts at 8am, catching up with email at home, before heading into the office at 9am. “It’s quite varied,” he says. “A lot of my work is with leisure boats, and that’s quite time-consuming as we’re dealing with customers on a one-to-one basis. A superyacht or commercial contract takes time, of course, but it’s different – more of a business and logistics challenge than the personal approach required for leisure customers. But it doesn’t matter how large or small a boat is, it’s vital that everyone gets the same high level of support from us.”
A day in the office might be the norm for Ewan, but he frequently travels. During the winter, he will often be found exhibiting at or attending Cannes, Monaco, Southampton and Düsseldorf boat shows, as well as the Superyacht Pavilion at the METS trade show in Amsterdam.
ENSURING QUALITY While a leisure customer may choose to apply the product themselves or to commission a yard to do it, a superyacht owner will likely already have a team responsible for paint application. “For superyachts, we prefer to offer a management service,” says Clark. “We’ll meet the team, and brief them
