The latest facts, fads and tips to help keep you in ship shape condition this winter

SPA OF THE SEASON

BLUE LAGOON RETREAT SPA, REYKJAVIK

Carved from volcanic rock, it offers all the treatments and facilities you would expect within these otherworldly surroundings – like the signature in-water massage, performed above the divergent Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. Or the cavernous Ritual Room, where you can slather yourself in mineral and lava salts (for exfoliation), silica (for purification) and algae (for hydration), before wallowing in 39°C therapeutic waters, guaranteed to leave skin as silky as the day you were born. www.bluelagoon.com

BEAUTY MYTH HAIR IS SELF CLEANING

False (sort of). Your hair won’t clean itself, but the oils on the strands will reach a balance – in short, your hair won’t be as horribly greasy as it gets after a few days of neglect, but not as clean as when it’s freshly washed. However, this isn’t particularly good for your hair (or your hygiene!) so stock up on your favourite shampoos.

HAMMER TIME The percussive therapy device deliver a deep muscle treatment unlike anything you’ve ever felt. The Theragun uses repetitive strokes into muscle 16mm deep, 40 times a second - 60% deeper than vibration massagers - to stimulate circulation, generate heat and release your deepest tension. Reaching the lower back? With four arm positions the Theragun Triangle has an ergonomic handle providing full body reach. www.theragun.com

WORKOUT APPS

NIKE+ RUN CLUB This app has the tools you need to run better, including GPS run tracking; audio guided

runs; weekly, monthly and custom distance challenges; customised coaching plans for your goals; and nonstop motivation from your friends.

AAPTIV

Do you really need a video of someone telling you “it’s time to go faster?” Nah. Aaptiv

packs great audio–only classes for all those workouts that just don’t make sense for video. Smart design, great music, and a huge library of classes make exercise enjoyable.

THE WORLD IS YOUR OYSTER

Oyster therapy is becoming popular. Try an ‘Ostreathérapie’ treatment that harnesses the healing powers of the bivalve and enhances well-being, while serums and creams infused with oyster flesh are apparently rich in youth preserving antioxidants.

YOU MUST TRY...

BAMBOO TAPPING Use a tightly bound bundle of thin rods of bamboo, to tap areas of the body. Bamboo has historically been used in Chinese medicine and is considered cooling and calming. Like gua sha or cupping, tapping can help to boost circulation of your blood and ‘qi’ or ‘chi’ (translated as live force or energy), which can become disrupted or stagnant due to factors like stress, emotional upset or injury.

What is it? It’s a treatment method that was developed by Chinese Physician Hua Tuo during the Eastern Han Dynasty, by tapping the body parts to extract the internal toxins accumulated from local muscle and joints injuries, or symptoms as caused by excess wind and dampness (sluggishness) within the body.

How does it work? By incorporating stretching with tapping, you are able to gradually correct this imbalance, while also opening up space for the meridians or any internal symptoms to surface.

How will it help me? An all over body tap can clear areas of stagnation, support lymphatic drainage, release tension and encourage a smooth flow of blood and qi around the body. It’s a great antidote to feeling tired or sluggish. You can do it briskly and firmly in the morning to invigorate and enliven the skin or you can perform it gently and slowly to release tension and unwind at the end of the day.
