Skin deep

How about a detox for the biggest organ in your body?

SKIN DETOX TIPS

Show temperature Turn the shower from hot to

cold, this helps push out toxins from the pores and helps to

revitalise your whole body, go as cold as you can.

Steam it out If you can, sit in the steam

room, this helps to open the pores. Remember to make

sure your skin is clean before you go in!

Hot yoga Popular since the 70s, T

o detox, in simple terms, means to remove toxins from the body. These

can come from the environment, your diet, and lifestyle choices such as smoking and drinking…..Your lungs, liver, kidneys, and colon have the ability to remove harmful substances all by themselves. But that hasn’t stopped people from embarking on juice cleanses and fad diets in a bid to fully ‘detox’. The trend has also encouraged the beauty industry to adopt detoxification.

Your skin is the largest organ in the body and therefore picks up lots of dirt and grime, some believe it is possible to purge the skin and remove all the bad stuff that’s clogging pores.

True or false? There’s no such thing as a skin detox from a medical perspective, but what you can do is protect it from potential

environmental toxins, such as pollution and UV rays. The stratum corneum or skin barrier, helps keep skin healthy by blocking substances that can cause premature aging, among other environment damage. So, when people talk about detoxing the skin, it’s more about what you can do to the surface to protect it from the outside world more than actually clearing out what’s on the inside. Toxins can exit the body through the skin.

It’s true that your skin may feel cleaner and smoother after a face mask, but that’s all the product is doing. Products can, however, get rid of grime from the surface of the skin such as excess sebum and dead skin cells. Some skin care products use the term ‘detox’ in terms of skin defense, and products containing antioxidants can reduce the effects of environmental damage.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

Add exfoliation to your routine Exfoliate at least once a week. A build-up of dead skin cells can reduce the effectiveness of any skin care products you use, lead to breakouts, and even dull your entire complexion.

Slap it on The sun’s rays can be harmful all year round, so covering yourself in sunscreen is the best form of protection against skin cancer and signs of sun damage. Just

make sure that the sunscreen offers broad-spectrum protection, water resistance, and an SPF of at least 30.

Diet While research suggests that diet can play a key role in the development of skin conditions like acne, you may have to go through some trial and error to figure out your personal triggers. Foods and drinks to look out for include ones high in sugar

or refined carbohydrates, or ingredients lists containing dairy. Alcohol can also have a negative impact on skin.

Stay hydrated Drink at least one litre of water a day to benefit your overall health. It’s also thought that hydration can help the skin by remedying dryness and dullness. Obviously in hotter climates or if you’re working hard, take more water on board.

Bikram yoga is carried out in humid and hot conditions and helps to remove those impurities…

Wash and go

Wash your face after exercise or after a days work and, if in hotter conditions, wash your

face properly more than once a day – get that skunk off!

Hands off

Avoid touching your face. We’re just as guilty, but this is bad

news for spreading germs and more. Wash your hands and ‘touche pas’.

6 Keep it clean

Clean your phone screen. Studies have shown that more than 10,000 bacterial genes are found on a phone screen, that’s more than on a toilet seat.

7 Balanced diet

It’s not that difficult in today’s world to eat your

five a day. But it is essential with a busy lifestyle.
