OPINIONS, FACTS, STORIES AND WHAT’S NEW IN THE FASCINATING WORLD OF YACHTING

YACHTIE TYPES THE INFLUENCER

So this year even the Monaco Yacht Show gave free tickets to ‘influencers’ with a decent following – does this mean soon we’ll be expected to host them as charter guests ‘for the exposure’? You can be sure these freeloaders won’t be tipping so please, owners, say no… That being said we’ve got a bunch of so called influencers already working as crew pausing work to take pics and live stream… so there’s no hope for us. God help us all…. Sigh…*takes a sad selfie for Instagram then does a quick dance for TikTok* Can I have my free stuff now then yeah?

WHAT’S HOT...

ENVIRONMENT As always the yachting industry’s impact on the environment is a hot topic. With Extinction Rebellion making their presence known at the recent Superyacht Forum, organisers actually invited them on stage to talk to the audience. Did it go well? Not really… Will the yachting industry take notice? Let’s see… jury’s out!

SUSTAINABILITY is at the top of everyone’s agenda and it’s great to see Dutch builders Feadship pushing towards their goal of building eco-friendly carbon neutral yachts by 2030 with their concept vessel Pure.

WOMEN in yachting is another hot topic. With organisations such as She of the Sea mentoring and helping women enter and build a career in yachting it’s been great to see awareness grow, such as at METSTRADE 2022 where six female industry leaders took to the stage to tell their inspiring stories.

KANYE Love him or hate him Kanye continues to hit the headlines. Getting dumped by his brands then asking if he could question every potential new husband of Kim Kardashian in their divorce trial, well at least there’s never a dull moment.

The current sailing speed

record. In November 2012, the Australian Paul Larsen reached 65,45 knots, a speed of 121 kilometres per hour. Achieved with his Vestas Sail Rocket 2 when he blasted over the South Atlantic waters off the coast of Namibia

“Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than those you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from safe harbor. Catch the wind in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover”

Mark Twain

PETER DE SAVARY ENTREPRENEUR, HOTELIER & YACHTSMAN

1944-2022 De Savary first rose to prominence in the 1980s as both a keen yachtsman leading the British challenge for the America’s Cup in 1983 and as a visionary entrepreneur who at one point owned both the most southern and northern points of the UK; Land’s End & John O’Groats. The buccaneering entrepreneur will be missed.

CREW WELFARE continues to be discussed but no actions seem to be forthcoming. There’s still no specific place crew can go to report harassment, assault, or abuse and this needs to change. Perhaps we’ll see Nautilus and / or the PYA step up to offer these extra services when management, flag state, or local port authorities can’t or won’t help?

WORLD CUP Well that was a different World Cup wasn’t it? Fraught with scandals over their (lack of) human rights, the number of reported deaths in constructing the stadiums and supporting buildings, the lack of beer (possibly the worst part for most fans), Qatar have taken a bit of a beating over it all. One thing’s for sure – it’s been memorable, if for all the wrong reasons. If a Footy world cup could be a Fyre Festival, well it was this one.

AND NOT...

OWNERS Uneducated or just plain ignorant owners are ruining the industry. Failure to recognise the need for safe working conditions for their crew and off-loading all responsibilities to third parties is getting tiresome and the crew are getting fed up with it. When will owners and managers recognise the fact that without crew, they’re all going to be in serious trouble?
