Hypnobirthing & Hormones

Hypnobirthing courses teach you to use deep relaxation and visualisation techniques, which is a form of self hypnosis. They also cover aspects of labour and birth such as anatomy, birth planning, birthing environment and the role of the birthing partner.

Your body has a cocktail of hormones, some are very useful for birth and others can cause labour to slow down or even stop completely.

It’s

important to learn about these and how to encourage the positive birthing hormones to help birth your baby.

Oxytocin, known as the love hormone is needed for labour to start and to keep progressing, it’s also needed for milk production and bonding with your baby.

Stress hormones create what is known as the fight or flight response in the body. Reducing blood flow and oxygen to some parts of the body which include the reproductive system.

If an animal is birthing and feels in danger, it’s labour will slow down and even stop, until they have moved to a place of safety where it will start again. This is a built in protective mechanism that in most cases for humans is not needed anymore. When thinking about this it is easy to see the importance of reducing stress in the process of labour and birth.

There are many things you can do to help with keeping oxytocin levels up, such as self hypnosis and breathing techniques, listening to relaxing MP3s, having a supportive and calm birthing partner, having a relaxing birth environment, light massage and movement. All of these are discussed and many practiced in hypnobirthing classes.

Many women are put off hypnobirthing as they feel a sense of pressure that they must have a pain free natural birth. The Wise Hippo Birthing Programme which I teach is focused on a natural birth, however it supports all types of birth whether home, hospital, medicated, assisted or C-csection.

Hypnobirthing provides you with a tool box to help you through labour and birth. It gives you confidence in making birth choices that are right for you and your family and helps you have a positive birthing experience.

BREATHNG TECHNIQUE...

To help you relax try a simple breathing technique that relaxes all areas of your body.

Take a deep breath in and as you breathe out count slowly in your mind 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.

• As you say 5 relax your head, neck and face muscles.

• As you say 4 relax your shoulders, arms and upper back.

• As you say 3 relax the mid, lower back and abdomen area.

• As you say 2 relax your pelvic and bottom area. • As you say 1 relax your legs and feet.
