Puddles!!!! DICTIONARY

Puddle (noun) a small pool of liquid, especially of rainwater on the ground.

Ask any parent and they will tell you it’s more likely to be a huge volume of water, deeper than it looks, guaranteed to contain mud and instantly attractive to toddlers!

Well, if you can’t beat ‘em join ‘em! Get your own wellies on and have fun exploring those enchanting pools of water with your child! In fact, a great safety message for kids is that THEY ONLY GO IN PUDDLES WHEN WITH AN ADULT, since small children can drown in just a few centimetres of water.

If water isn’t your thing then head out bedecked in as much waterproof clothing as you can find for both you and them! Oh, and make sure you have a towel and dry clothes for you all to change back into if you have ventured away from home!

Simple fun can always be had just jumping in puddles and seeing how high and wide the water can go when tapped with feet hands and any other natural implement (pebbles, branches etc).

Puddle Race – Choose two puddles and see who can empty theirs first!

The Long Puddle Jump – Can you make your way along the road only in puddles (you may have to add a swinging caveat in for little legs with your long arms!)

Counting Jumps – How many jumps empty the puddle?

Sink or Float? - Find objects to place in a puddle (nothing valuable!). Try and guess will it sink or float, then test your theory!

Blow Me Down – Find a leaf, how long does it take to blow the leaf from one side of the puddle to the other!

Musical Puddles – If you’re happy and you know it stamp your feet (just in the puddle!).

For bigger children why not measure how deep the puddle is, how wide or even where the deepest part is, then measure again once it has been jumped in? Work on those measuring skills!

Finally, always remember to check the depth of the puddle yourself before jumping in - We all remember THAT episode where Dawn French as the Vicar of Dibley jumped in a delicate puddle to find herself up to her elbows! But if it happens – share the video!
