New demolition hammers Makita has expanded its XGT range of battery-powered tools,

with its first 40VMax x2 (80-Volt) demolition hammers. Both the 40VMax x2 XGT Brushless Demolition Hammer (HM002GZ03) and the 40VMax x2 XGT Brushless Rotary Demolition Hammer (HR006GZ) are powered by two 40VMax XGT Li-Ion batteries. Both tools are thus up to the power and performance of equivalent corded machinery. Also launched is the 40VMax x2 XGT Brushless Rotary

Demolition Hammer (HR006GZ), which has two operating modes – rotary hammer and hammer only. It includes a variable speed control, has a drilling speed of 150 to 310 rpm and delivers 1,100 to 2,250 bpm. The machine is compatible with SDS-MAX chisels, drill bits up to 52mm and core bits up to 160mm. For user safety the HR006GZ includes Makita’s Active Feedback Technology

(AFT), which shuts down the tool if the rotation speed suddenly slows. The tools also benefit from Auto-Start Wireless System functionality, which allows the tool to connect to compatible dust extractors via Bluetooth when fitted with an AWS chip.

Clean energy

from Atlas Copco The new ‘ZenergiZe' range from Atlas Copco Power Technique takes modular energy storage to a new level, while reducing fuel consumption, CO2

of maintenance. Utilising high-density lithium-ion batteries, the ZenergiZe units are

compact and relatively lightweight, yet are capable of providing over 12 hours of power from a single charge. Like the medium range models, the ZenergiZe storage system can be

used as a standalone source, with other generators to make a hybrid power solution or combined with renewable sources of energy. They can also act as the ‘brain' of a microgrid, storing, regulating, and managing the power coming from different sources. With a footprint of just 10ft or 20ft, depending on the model, they are easy to use, scale and install.

A cut above There are domestic electric grass-cutters, such as you might see at the local

DIY barn, then there's the 'Edge' zero-turn mower from Ariens - a ride-on device that makes your author wish he had a larger garden... The Edge mower is aimed squarely at domestic users. Perhaps even

groundscare specialists with smaller acreages to look after, thanks to features such as easy control levers, a six mph top speed, and a neat ability to about-face on a sixpence. Cutting time is claimed to be 50% faster than a traditional a lawn tractor, since there is no need to turn, reverse, turn again, straighten out or stop. In other regards, the Edge includes

features normally seen on larger commercial machines, albeit at a more affordable price - a 635cc engine, a high-back adjustable seat, ergonomically positioned controls, and two versions with 86cm or 107cm cutting decks. Meanwhile, a foot- operated pedal changes deck heights from 3.8cm to 12.7cm and the 20.3cm wide rear tyres provide a smoother, more comfortable ride.
