All of which sounds quite esoteric, so what’s a typical job for TRS?


TRS keeps much of its larger equipment in a storage yard nearby.


“We’re working with companies in onshore oil & gas, utilities and manufacturing that plan far ahead, which gives us time to think about what’s needed,” Gareth explains. “We recently bought over 300 ATEX-certified lights for a shutdown. We scoped the task, worked out the cable runs and supplied the lighting design, so we knew exactly how many lights were needed, the length of cable required and exactly where the lights were going to be put on the job.”


“The companies we deal with are potentially going to lose more money with resource and manpower sitting idle than they ever would over hire rates – so we focus on value of quality and service,” he adds. “It’s about being on time, having everything ready to go and ensuring it is the right kit for the job. If there’s a bump in the road, our clients can


be sure that we’ll be there to sort it out. That’s where we come into our own.”


And being so specialised, what sort of reach does the company have?


“We have customers in the industrial hotspots such as Grangemouth, Teesside, Humberside, Cheshire, South Wales and the south coast. We know the manufacturers that require this type of kit, and I proactively target them,” says Peter. “We’ve also supplied specialised equipment for projects in Finland, UAE, Ireland, Germany, France and North Africa. Some of the larger hire companies have specialist industrial divisions, but we have a lot of experience – particularly in shutdowns – which is why clients chose to use us.”


And then, as if to underline the point, Peter causally drops a splendid anecdote: “I was watching the Formula 1 in Bahrain, and there was an advertisement on the side of the track for a Saudi owned oil company. I Googled them and found that they are the most profitable company in the world and that they are the parent company of one of our customers. Then I Googled the UKs most profitable company, and found it was a household goods manufacturer – we deal directly with them too. So it’s great to have both the worlds and UKs most profitable companies on the books as well as other blue-chip clients including two water authorities and a portfolio of British and international manufacturing, process and energy giants and their contractors.”


I daresay that Peter could have listed a few more besides, but it was time to conclude the meeting with a final question. TRS’ current size is plainly no impediment to an enviable client roster, but what is the plan going forward – how big will the company be?


“Gareth would probably like it to be a global multinational, but I’d currently prefer to grow the centralised service offering, providing our specialism further afield.” says Peter. “Having a network of depots and drivers delivering nationwide isn’t really what we’re about, however we might explore options in areas like Humberside, Grangemouth and Ellesmere Port in the not-too-distant future. Areas that may been seen as unattractive industrial-land to some are seen as Disneyland to us! n
