cams. By integrating the two technologies, Lytx aims to improve driver behaviour, which in turn reduces accident rates, claim costs and insurance premiums.

Brandon Hire Station saw a 46% drop in collisions involving its vehicles over the course of a year, along with dramatic declines in what Lytx classes as risky driving behaviours. Because the system records and stores footage of a collision, near-miss or incidence of bad driving, the company can use the video evidence to resolve disputed insurance claims. It can also use the video clips in driver training.

JCB’s LiveLink Fleet website portal allows various machine parameters to be monitored.

“Battery voltage information is also really useful. If a customer calls us to tell us a machine won’t start, we can see the battery data before we send an engineer. In the same way, we can often know what to put on the van in terms of replacement parts before we set off. There’s no guesswork or taking ‘one of everything’ anymore.”

Ashbrook imports data from LiveLink Fleet to its Syrinx hire software from Point of Rental, meaning that its employees can see all key information from within one system, rather than having to log into separate web portals. “It is great for us because we can run our service reports straight from Syrinx,” added Tom Farrington. “It makes it all very easy. Syrinx will also accept data from VisionLink telematics, which we have on some of our other plant, so it is all in one place.”

Customer benefits

Ashbrook’s customers also benefit from LiveLink. “When our customers are working on a big site, sometimes machines go missing as other contractors ‘help themselves’,” said Farrington. “We can quickly locate the machine for them with the GPS tracking. The same goes for when we send engineers or drivers to collect machines. It saves a lot of wasted time.

“Service information and physical location are extremely important in order to maximise efficiency and minimise machine down-time for our customers. JCB LiveLink allows us to deliver both.”

Riwal offers its clients access to telematics data via its customer portal. “Extending that capability to interpret the data is very helpful to our customers,” said Glenn Verburg. “For example, they can create alerts, so they receive notifications if they don’t use a machine for three days and they can off-hire it.”

Telematics cameras

Brandon Hire Station has gone a step further by adopting telematics cameras from Lytx. As the name suggests, these devices combine the benefits of vehicle trackers with dashboard cameras, or dash

Lytx uses video footage, motion and engine control module (ECM) sensors to present an accurate view of risk, across more than 60 risky driving behaviours. This can be fed back to drivers, to help them eradicate bad habits and improve road safety. Installing cameras in vehicles is not always welcome, with some employees feeling it is an infringement on privacy. However, telematics cameras such as Lytx are proven to reduce the risk of a driver being involved in a road traffic incident.

“Our drivers have responded brilliantly to the introduction of Lytx,” said Stuart Conway, fleet manager at Brandon Hire Station. “Overwhelmingly, they saw it as investment in their safety and their future, and in the safety of other road users, too. I’d like to think the very strong results we’ve already achieved are only the beginning.”

Brandon Hire Station has successfully implemented telematics cameras from Lytx to enhance safety and efficiency.

Telematics has evolved way beyond mere asset tracking. It can add value for hirers through theft prevention, improved productivity, and even monitoring machine health. Telematics cameras are yet to cross over from vehicles to plant, but they also represent a great opportunity to improve road safety in a company’s transport, engineer and field sales teams.
