ELECTRIC
We’ve supplied electrical products and LED lighting to keep the power going and get these places up and running. They needed the equipment on Easter Sunday, so we opened up so they could come and collect it. We’re also working with another customer who is developing a product for the NHS, but I can’t say too much about that. In short, we’re operational at the moment, just not with 100% of the staff.”
This does rather invite the question about HSC’s plans to re-open when better and safer times are here again. How has the team been preparing for this and what will they do, we asked? “The way we look at things now probably won’t be the way we look at them in three weeks’ time,” says Gary. “I suppose it will depend if the government allows building work to continue in the interim and other businesses to reopen. When we are finally out of lockdown, my idea is that we will stage the return of furloughed staff in line with the increase in business.
“We have continued to place orders with our suppliers, who are mainly in the Far East, so that we can ensure we have the stock to supply our customers when they come back.”
BATTERY LIFE UP TO 6 HOURS*
The warehouse is normally a hive of activity. Fortunately, the phones are still ringing at HSC UK.
Much has been said and written about what the country will look like once the viral outbreak is over, and how businesses might operate. What does HSC think about this, and what will it do that is different if another pandemic
takes hold in the future? “This a difficult question, because we don’t really know what the landscape will look like,” says Gary. “I think it will be a case of reacting as things move forward. One of the beautiful things about our business is that we can do that. We are a relatively small company with 27 members of staff, so we can change direction quite quickly.
“When we come out of lockdown, that will be the time for us to sit down and think about what we’ll do better if this ever happens again. When we saw that the business was starting to dry up we quickly decided that we needed to be on top of the situation - we learned that from our experiences during the last recession. We reacted within a week of the government’s announcement that there was a furlough being put in place, although it only took that long because of the lack of clarity about how it would work.
“We kept our team as well-informed as we could throughout and, to be fair, their response was 100% behind the measures to keep the business going, and they accepted the furlough in the meantime.”
And that seemed like useful point to draw things to a close: a mid-sized and agile company, with the experience and wherewithal to bounce back once this viral outbreak is finally over. Not every hirer or supplier is in quite the same boat, of course. In that regard, we’re certainly keen to hear your stories of survival in the lockdown. My thanks to Gary for his time during his enforced isolation, and to HSC Sales Director, Dan Musson, for some highly useful leads for us to follow up. And more about those anon…
