MHM - Profile

That’s good to hear, although MHM is out and about even earlier, having signed up for the EHS Roadshows later this year, and for EHS 2022. What can we expect?

“It will be a bit of a learning curve for me, but I have a few ideas about what we can do that’s going to be bigger, better and shinier, so watch this space,” says Elaine, tantalisingly.

“We always try to make an impact,” continues Mat. “The reason why we wanted to change our stand is because we have a larger sales team and I want them everyone to be present. Also I wanted to highlight our range of hybrid, fossil fuel-free and emissions-friendly equipment. There’s an aisle between both halves of our stand, so one side will be dedicated to all our innovative green products.”

It will be interesting to see which half of MHM’s EHS stand attracts the most attention, but what part do battery and hybrid technologies play in the wider business?

“We’ve always understood that fossil fuels may not be a part of our future,” says Mat. “The difficulty comes in communicating to the market that such technologies exist. This year we joined the ‘Supply Chain School of Sustainability’ and we’re part of the Plant

‘‘ We’re several years

behind the automotive sector, in terms of its adoption of new

technologies, but we’re accelerating

group that meets to brainstorm what can be achieved with the equipment available today – a lot of big contractors are unaware that such products exist because they’re not being told about them by their suppliers. When red diesel is finally scrapped, these same contractors will be begging for alternative solutions.

’’

“Independent hirers are already preparing for this change, and they’re talking to their customers about such options. We still provide petrol and diesel-powered equipment, but we are gearing up to diversify and completely move away from non-sustainable fuels. We’ve already made the leap to battery and solar power with our lighting towers.”

Lighting towers are a key part of the MHM range - and they sell by the truckload.

To a similar end, MHM recently announced a move towards Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) fuels. What are the advantages?

“If the only option is traditional engine-driven equipment, HVO is an ideal alternative,” says Mat. “We’re not saying it is the entire solution, but we have been working closely with engine manufacturers such as Yanmar, Kohler, IVECO and Kubota, to make sure that their equipment is compatible with ours. The HVO from Crown Oil that we use is made purely from cooking fats, so it’s fully sustainable.”

“The problem for our industry is working out how we’re going to play our part,” adds Josh, who had recently entered the room. “We’re several years behind the automotive sector, in terms of its adoption of new technologies, but we’re accelerating. The companies that succeed will be those supplying the right products and helping their customers make the transition. That’s the challenge for MHM, and why Mat has recruited area sales managers who are real- hands-on guys and can show and demonstrate our equipment, and explain what the options are. We don’t have all the answers but we’re putting a lot of effort and energy into alternative fuels solutions, as we see this as the future.”

Indeed, and MHM certainly does not seem to stand still for too long. Rounding up, then, what can we expect next from the company

“At the moment we’re looking at Electric Vehicle charging and we’re planning a fuel management service for our customers,” says Mat. “We hope to launch that in Q4, but certainly in time for The Executive Hire Show next February.”

“The big revolution in power will be performance telemetry on machinery, which will make sites around the UK more efficient,” adds Josh. “There’s no need for a 100kVA generator running all day when a smaller, greener machine can supply power when it is actually needed. This hasn’t been done before, but if anyone is going to crack it, we’ll crack it!”

As if to prove the point, Rob, Mat and Elaine then assembled an array of the company’s current equipment and posed proudly in front of it. The enthusiasm and group dynamic were readily apparent, so we greatly look forward to seeing how MHM showcases its range at EHS 2022. With more hands on deck, double the stand space (theirs is the biggest) and a prime location by the main entrance, it’s unlikely that you’ll miss them. n

As well as its range of generators and lighting, MHM has moved into fuel storage solutions.
