National express National Tool Hire describes itself as the AirBNB or
Booking.com of
the tool hire world. In 2018 its business model changed from being a commission-only
virtual hire partner, to becoming a rehire business in the true sense of the word. The service now attracts almost 2,000,000 unique visitors to its main site every year. “We don’t struggle with customer acquisition, that’s for sure, the
challenge is more about availability of equipment and suppliers, who don’t yet know about us. We have forged such great working relationships with our suppliers and friendships too, we’d like access to more of the same,” said Jonathan Hughes, National Tool Hire’s managing director. When it switched to being a rehire business, the company looked
for a booking system that could handle the idiosyncrasies of the rehire world. Unable to find one that fit the bill, the company set about
developing its own. The result was a system they called ‘Bob’, which worked across for all departments and users, and employed a simple interface enabling proficiency within an hour of first use. Bob has helped to propel the company forward. More functionality
has been added over the last 2.5 years, with further amendments planned. Bob also integrates with National’s financial and email systems, its website, online booking, customer services and purchasing functions. It can create reports and drill down into performance metrics.
