BUSINESS CLINIC

order to reduce resourcing pressure on the engineering team. This would significantly increase production line run times and offer development opportunities to non-skilled or semi- skilled staff - with the knock-on effect of providing career opportunities.

A particularly clever chap had improvised a heat-capturing two-way valve to harness energy to heat furnaces. A simple handmade device could achieve 20% savings on the cost of gas per production line.

The ‘dragons’ and I were suitably impressed. ‘Why haven’t we done this before?’ asked one. The answer: well, we’ve never been asked to think about different ways of working before.

I tried to calculate the financial savings which could be achieved for that company from the eight presentations we saw in just one day from just one of the cohorts that had attended the programme but, I confess, I’m terrible with a calculator. Let me just say there were at least six noughts on the end. I really hope they implement everything we saw because, apart from the cost savings, the team had come up with new opportunities for staff, safer ways of

working and significant benefits for the environment.

As I drove home, I felt really positive about our future despite Brexit and all its uncertainty because we have these really, really talented people in our workforce. We just need to find them and give them the chance to use their talent.

There is a proverb ‘Necessity is the mother of invention’, which I remember my mum telling me when she was explaining some of the stuff they did when she was growing up with rationing after World War II. Using gravy browning

and eye-liner to give the appearance of stockings and making clothes out of blackout curtains were popular ways to dress for a night out; youngsters today have it so easy!

Whether that necessity arises out of a need, a reaction to something (such as Brexit) or just being asked to do it as part of a development programme, what I witnessed was the huge power of developing the workforce and encouraging people to think creatively. I can tell you, it made me proud to be part of it.
