Holland & Barrett achieves zero waste to landfill
LEADING health and wellness retailer, Holland & Barrett, has achieved zero waste to landfill by working with Burton-based Willshee’s Waste & Recycling.
With over 850 shops across the UK, managing Holland & Barrett’s refuse is a major task. It is the responsibility of the environmental health and safety (EHS) team which is led by head of department Simon Birtles.
Prior to the partnership with Willshee’s Waste & Recycling, a high percentage of refuse produced by Holland & Barrett was processed as general waste from which residual waste would have been sent to landfill. This amounted to approximately 25% of the total volume.
EHS manager Mark Cosford joined Simon’s team a year ago, during which time waste management and recycling has been completely overhauled ‒ with
a review of the entire process, reducing the roster of nine companies down to one. The benefits are numerous, as Mark explained: “Not only are we now achieving zero waste to landfill, but we are far more environmentally friendly than we used to be.”
Every day, stock is delivered to around 170 to 180 stores, and at the same time all their waste is collected and brought back to the Burton distribution centre for in-house sortation. Waste is then segregated and transported to a Willshee’s recycling facility where it is sorted and processed. “Any residual waste is reprocessed into
Young people at The Junction take another step in the right direction
THE Junction, a charity which strives to make a difference to the lives of children, young people and their families in the Middlesbrough area, has partnered with EMR Metal Recycling, one of the world’s leading metal recyclers.
As part of the partnership, EMR, based on Depot Road, has donated towards The Junction’s Youth Employment Service which engages with young people and enables them to re-enter the employment market or access further training.
EMR’s donation will provide new interview clothing and support their travelling to and from interviews. It will also fund a three-day group activity for the young people to learn interview, cooking, problem solving and budgeting skills and will develop confidence and reduce anxiety through team-building, as well as
having access to mock interviews. All of which aims to improve their chances of employment.

Beth Major, CEO of The Junction Foundation, said: “We are so happy to have received this support from EMR, who contacted us to see how they could help. It’s great to see companies in the Middlesbrough area reaching out and supporting the communities they are based in.
“The donation itself has been match funded by the Youth Employment Initiative (YEI), part of the European Commission, which means that it doubles the impact that EMR is having on our young people.
