The world leader in

recycling gypsum

New West Gypsum Recycling

NEW West Gypsum Recycling (NWGR)’s dedicated team will be on hand through the RWM show to answer your questions.

One of the most frequently asked questions they receive is: Why should plasterboard be recycled? The answer is twofold:

The environment

Plasterboard put into landfill will decompose, releasing up to a quarter of its weight in hydrogen sulphide. Furthermore, methanogenic bacteria will thrive in such an environment and will convert the paper in the plasterboard to methane gas which is a potent greenhouse gas.

Gypsum can essentially be recycled forever with no degradation to the material. NWGR offers a closed-loop, sustainable solution that ensures gypsum is not ‘lost’ as it is with composting or land spreading. In the UK, NWGR works with the plasterboard manufacturer Siniat UK, upholding NWGR’s philosophy of keeping gypsum material in the supply chain, reducing the need to extract virgin material which helps to preserve valuable, natural resources for generations to come.

Cost

Since April 2006 plasterboard waste is no longer permitted in general landfill and can only be landfilled at a mono-cell at a landfill site (a separate cell which only accepts high sulphate waste). This can cost the average business upwards of £250 per tonne.

NWGR prides itself on keeping the cost of recycling gypsum low, saving customers hundreds if not thousands of pounds compared to other ways of disposing of gypsum waste. Its proven business model has worked for almost three decades.

As part of this business model NWGR has just been awarded their ISO 9001 and ISO14001.
