review – ecobuild 2018

Sustainable construction show inspires change

T

he increasing use of timber in healthcare construction projects came under the spotlight as

ecobuild 2018 kicked off with a bang. The central conference programme

began by focusing on delivering the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, the New Urban Agenda, and the Paris Agreement. Beyond the main arena, there was

standing room only at many seminar sessions, with the Timber sessions

Daniel Kreissig of ZÜBLIN Timber,

which supplied the tulipwood for the project, added: “We are finding ourselves working on wooden structures more and more because clients are increasingly seeing the benefits of timber.” During the three-day event,

sustainability showcases also proved a huge attraction for visitors, with people exploring the space standard- compliant ZEDpod, a full-scale zero- carbon home; and The Hive Pocket Park, a diverse green space. On the second day, the conference

programme included a session focusing on construction quality in a post- Grenfell world; with Lynne Sullivan, chairman of the Good Homes Alliance, describing the fire as a ‘huge wake-up call’ and ‘symptomatic of systemic failures’ across industry which need to be dealt with. The Royal Institute of British

focusing on, among other things, the growing use of wood as a building material in health and care construction projects. Among the speakers on this subject

was Mark Moppett, managing director of Booth King and the structural engineer on the Maggie’s Centre Oldham cancer care project, the first construction scheme in the UK to use hardwood cross-laminated timber (CLT). Moppett said: “Wood is natural and

sustainable. It extends hope and brings a human scale to design, which is why it is becoming increasingly popular for healthcare projects.”

Architects (RIBA) used the show to launch its consultation for the Building in Quality initiative, which aims to encourage better collaboration, improved procurement and to introduce new methods to improve the quality of the built environment. And BREEAM UK launched a revision

of its world-leading sustainability method for real estate. Running alongside the three-day

conference was the annual exhibition, with suppliers of products and services showing off their latest innovations. Elizabeth Brabner from Bauder said:

“We had a crowd of about 50 people around the stand on the first morning

to watch a demonstration of our latest product. “The visitors who sign up for

ecobuild have a real purpose, which leads to valuable conversations.” Summing up day three, Martin Hurn,

managing director of Futurebuild Events, which runs the show, said: “To be able to end ecobuild 2018 with such a sense of purpose and a drive towards a more-sustainable future is fantastic. “The post-show mandate that we are

creating will be one that we hope will inspire real change.”
