Community hospital takes shape

W

ork has been completed on the first phase of the £70m development of East Lothian

Community Hospital. A new outpatient unit has been

handed over, marking completion of the initial work on a replacement for the existing Roodlands Hospital in Haddington. The facilities will see an increase in

gastroenterology; orthopaedics, urology; and ear, nose and throat services, as well as the introduction of new services such as plastics and phototherapy. The redevelopment of the hospital

site is being undertaken in partnership with Hub South East Scotland, with Morrison Construction appointed as the main contractor and Keppie Design working as the architect. David Small, chief Officer at East

Lothian Health and Social Care Partnership, said: “Throughout the extensive planning process we listened

to what mattered most to people and with the invaluable input from the community, patients and their families, third-sector organisations and staff we will have a hospital we can be proud of.” Jo Elliot, Hub South East’s chairman,

added: “The East Lothian Community Hospital is our largest project to begin construction and the biggest hub deal signed to date in Scotland. “It’s encouraging to see it

progressing on time and on budget and we look forward to successfully delivering future phases.” And commenting on the building

work, Morrison Construction’s operations director, David Wilson, said: ‘‘‘Work on site continues to progress well, with the steel frame for the next phase currently being erected for the inpatient departments and the rest of the hospital accommodation. “The demolition of the old outpatient

department will begin soon after hospital staff have relocated.”

Ophthalmology project completed A

new £7.5m ophthalmology unit has opened at Southlands Hospital in Shoreham-by-Sea,

West Sussex. The Western Sussex Eye Care facility

was delivered under the ProCure21+ framework by main contractor, Kier Construction, based on designs by Crowther Associates. And it features mechanical and

electrical services by engineers at TNG Consulting Engineers. The project comprised the

refurbishment of a redundant day surgery unit along with an adjoining occupied day unit. A rooftop plant room was

partially demolished and extended to accommodate the new heating, ventilation and air conditioning

plant equipment. The designs included heat recovery

thermal wheel ventilation, lightning and surge protection systems, and specialist IPS/UPS systems. TNG also provided designs for eTCP

touch-screen theatre control panels, centralised CCTV monitoring and recording, and a personal live tracking safety system. The completed building features 16

consultation/examination rooms, specialist imaging facilities, and a fluorescein angiography room. It also has a laser treatment room and two procedure rooms for ophthalmic surgery.
