carbon reduction
in brief
• Sussex trust is green pioneer Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust has been praised for its ‘pioneering’ approach to sustainability. Run in conjunction with Capita; its Care Without Carbon (CWC) initiative, which is leading the way in delivering greener healthcare services, was highlighted in the NHS Chief Medical Officer’s annual report on pollution. The CWC team has helped the organisation to cut its carbon footprint by 24% since 2010 – the equivalent of powering 200 local homes for a whole year.

Carbon-cutting efforts stay on track
The latest energy efficiency figures for health and care services highlight the challenge that lies ahead
One Hatfield Hospital in Hertfordshire has been recognised for its commitment to sustainable design. The new £40m facility has been certified as a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ building. Designed by Manning Elliot and built by Conlon Construction; it sets the bar for sustainable, productive and healthy environments that enhance the wellbeing of patients, visitors and staff.

• Help at hand Veolia has launched a range of energy efficiency and monitoring services designed to help organisations cut their emissions, reduce costs and energy consumption, and achieve the ISO 50001 energy management standard. The integrated range of services is specifically designed to identify the carbon footprint of sites and buildings, reduce consumption, and utilise sources of clean energy such as low-carbon CHP and renewables. Services include energy and environmental auditing, operational energy efficiency and strategies, and management of energy plant.

he health and care sector has saved £90m in the past year through efforts to reduce energy and water
use and cut waste. The latest Sustainable development in
the health and care system Annual Health Check document, co-ordinated by the NHS Sustainable Development Unit (SDU), reports on progress by medical and social care providers across England. And it shows that the work the SDU has
supported has delivered carbon saving of 330,000 tonnes, with more organisations reporting annually – up from 69% to 85%. And 45% of organisations’ reports are rated as ‘excellent’. In addition, staff awareness of
sustainability is high, with 93.6% considering it important. However, only 71% stated that their
own organisation actively supports the environment. NHS England is the only health
system in the world to commit itself to lowering its carbon consumption – by 80% by 2050. It set an interim target of reducing
carbon consumption by 10% between 2007-2015 and achieved an 11% reduction. But, with much of the low-hanging
fruit – such as lighting upgrades, CHP installation, and improved recycling policies – already picked, there are fears there may now be a decline in this success. Commenting on the latest figures, Jan
Ponsford, director at Virtus Consult, a specialist in energy reduction strategies, said: “Cutting energy consumption
begins with understanding what energy is being used, what is being wasted, and where the savings are most-easily made. “The value lies in balancing the time
taken for the expected savings to cover the initial expenditure on implementing the changes. “This requires a more-nuanced and
experienced approach, but the savings can be immediate and significant.” Nick Painter, head of energy efficiency
at Veolia, added: “There is a common perception among organisations that implementing sustainable carbon saving measures is a costly process, leading many to delay taking action. “However, they can still deliver
enhancements that generate substantial guaranteed savings.” The SDU is pushing forward a four-
pronged approach – Plan, Measure, Evaluate, Engage. It has also launched an online reporting tool to encourage improved engagement. SDU head of unit, Jerome Baddley,
told hdm: “A lot of the obvious things have already been introduced, although in a piecemeal fashion, but I feel confident there are still things that can be done to keep us on track. “It will be about working with energy-
efficiency experts and making sure we take a whole-system approach to creating sustainable health and care services moving forward.”
