Birthday windfall kickstarts healthcare estates overhaul

The health sector has dominated the news in recent weeks, with a promise of additional funding to shore up a struggling NHS as it celebrates its 70th year. Earlier this month, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Jeremy Hunt, announced that 40 NHS hospitals and community services would get £760m to modernise and transform their buildings – the biggest investment of its kind in over 10 years.

The money will be spent on programmes to meet local demand, such as new urgent care centres and the refurbishment of mental health facilities. This includes a number of projects which had previously been delayed or shelved due to a lack of capital. One of those is a new £79.5m surgical centre planned for Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton. You can read about this in our Projects section (p10).

This month also saw the Prime Minister announced a more long-term funding package for the health service; and she hinted that Brexit would make even more cash available to improve services and the estates from which they are delivered. In our news section, we explore how all this investment will impact on the health and care construction markets, with experts predicting a total pipeline of around £11.5bn (p7).

Other features in this edition include news of how the NHS is meeting its obligations to reduce carbon emissions (p21); how good acoustic environments can enhance health and care settings (p27); how colour is impacting on the choice of interior surface materials (p34); and there is a focus on water safety and infection control (p46).

Plus, we look at how art and graphics are playing a major role in the design of modern paediatric care facilities (p52).

And there are previews of upcoming events, including the annual healthcare buildings forum (p24) and the sustainable estates forum (p44); and a review of the 2018 Ecobuild conference and exhibition (p32).

Now we want to hear your news. In the next edition of hdm, we will be covering the issues that are driving investment in the health and care sectors, including infection control, carbon reduction, nurse call and communication systems, building materials, and furniture, fixtures and fittings.
