New research shows the healthcare washrooms market is growing stronger, supported by key drivers including infection prevention and health and safety

Healthcare sector drives product sales

T

he demands of the healthcare sector are driving increased sales of commercial washroom

products in the UK market. According to AMA Research, the

market is estimated to have increased by 10% between 2015-16, and is expected to grow by a further 15% between 2017-21. Washroom panel systems represent

the largest category – 40% of market value; while the sales of sanitaryware also account for a significant share. Just under three quarters of

products purchased are distributed via trade channels, including builders/plumbers’ merchants and distributors, according to the figures, with internet sales seeing stronger- than-average growth in recent years. Branded goods from leading

manufacturers continue to perform strongly, while non-branded OEM products remain a cost-effective option for budget-conscious hospitals. In terms of product design,

streamlined contemporary designs remain popular, driven by aesthetics, ease of cleaning, and perceived hygiene improvements. Safety is also key, with products

such as floor-level showers, non-slip surfaces and low-level door sills seeing substantial growth. Natural finishes incorporating real

stone or wood are also becoming popular, while in the brassware and shower/mixers sectors, the need to conserve water is a key R&D feature, resulting in sensor-activated taps and precision targeting of flow rates. In addition, mixer taps continue to

gain popularity within healthcare and thermostatic controls have become the safety standard to prevent scalding. Smart technology and digital

features, including touch-free controls, movement sensors, automatic flushing and regulated temperature controls are also become more prevalent and there is a trend towards specifying complete washroom solutions, including investment in modular pods. And the requirement for quick

installation is driving wider use of pre-fabricated panels and systems. Commenting on the findings,

Hayley Thornley of AMA Research, said: “Growth in the commercial washrooms market will be supported by rising prices and underlying demand in sectors such as health, particularly for RMI work, with the outlook more positive towards the end of the forecast period when the economic and political situation is expected to be more stable.”
