Barrow primary care centre project gets off the ground
W
ork is set to begin on a new multi-million-pound primary care centre in Barrow-in-
Furness, Cumbria. The facility will bring together primary
and community care services and will help to reduce unnecessary hospital admissions. It will be situated on the site of the
former Alfred Barrow School following the final go-ahead granted by health commissioners. The school was first built in 1888 and
was given Grade 2 listing in 1993 before being closed in 2013. The development shows how modern
and historic architecture can work effectively together and is designed to preserve and enhance the building as well as create a modern healthcare facility. Designed to achieve a BREEAM
‘excellent’ rating; the 5,000sq m site will be developed through a Public Private Partnership LIFT programme led by Community Health Partnerships (CHP) in conjunction with its local joint venture
partner, eLIFT Cumbria. ESH Construction will undertake the building work, with completion planned for spring 2019. The design aims to support the
delivery of integrated care while creating an innovative workspace which departs from more-conventional office layouts to help people focus on new ways of working and increased collaboration. CHP’s development director, Eugene
Prinsloo, said: “Our purpose is to improve patient access to primary and community care through investment in high-quality health facilities. “The people of Barrow will see the
benefits of how public private partnership will help transform their health and wellbeing closer to home.” The facility will house several GP
surgeries and community and children’s health services in one building while preserving the oldest part of the Victorian building for office accommodation and the ambulance service. The centre will have a welcoming,
Sale of historic former hospital raises vital funds
T
he sale of an historic hospital site in Kent is set to raise vital funds for the NHS and could provide a
new lease of life for the property. The former St Bartholomew’s
Hospital in New Road, Rochester, has stood empty since September 2016 after being declared surplus to the needs of the NHS by Medway Clinical Commissioning Group in June 2016. As owner, NHS Property Services
(NHS PS) has a responsibility to secure the best-possible return on behalf of the NHS now the site is no longer needed and has instructed Savills to advertise the property for sale on the open market. David Thurgar, senior transaction
manager at NHS PS, said: “Our overall remit is to generate funds from the sale of surplus land to reinvest in the NHS and free up space for much-needed homes. “By selling land that the NHS no
