Step 1. Rub a thin layer of petroleum jelly over the mask mould
to prevent the tissue paper sticking to the surface, taking care around the eyes, nose and lips. This enables the mould to be re-used for other art projects.
Step 2. Thin down washable PVA... to a more runny consistency. Choose your colours of tissue paper for the mask and tear into smaller pieces. Try to create interesting shapes as you do this, as it adds to the design of the mask!
Step 3. Begin to decorate the mask – Lay a piece of tissue down at a time brushing over the top with the PVA solution taking care to completely cover, the paper. PVA makes the tissue paper semi-transparent; think what colours you’d like to make as you place one on top of the other. The more layers you add, the stronger the mask!
Step 4. Use metallic pens... stick sequins, feathers, beads etc. to make fantastic Mardis
Gras masks!
Step 5. Allow the mask to dry... thoroughly overnight. Remove the mask from the mould. Providing the petroleum jelly was put on evenly, the mask should lift-off quite easily.
