Meet our experts Busy Bears/Busy Bees, County Durham
Emma Hutton is Senior Practitioner at Busy Bears Children’s Day
Emma says…..
“Every area in our nursery is developed with the mind-set that children should be able to make choices and be presented with opportunities to allow them to develop ‘skills’. The paint area is no different. The paint used is not ready mixed. All of the children mix their own from powder”.
How to...
Mix Powder Colour
“Painting and colour mixing provides opportunities for children to show curiosity, develop new skills, develop confidence and autonomy, make choices…… language and literacy is challenged as they vocalise, make sounds, talk about what they are doing and collaborate with others”
Painting Station (why not create your own?)
Shade cards are placed for the children’s reference, powder paint is in sugar dispensers for ‘shots of powder’. Tea light holders are used to indicate portion size and water is in a pump dispenser for small portions. This makes selecting and mixing paint very simple and manageable. (We have referred to the work of Alistair Bryce Clegg to ensure the principles of a good paint mixing station are followed).
