The Promo Column Not to be thrown away

It’s already nearly halfway through the year – how did that happen? This month, promotional products commentator, Stuart Derrick, reports on recycled products, alternative products and handy products.

in more ways than one, but that doesnʼt stop us planning for whatever the summer might throw at us. Not that we should be following suit in throwing things. In these days of the three Rs – reduce, reuse, and recycle – itʼs incumbent on us all to think about the resources that we are using. Even if the summer isnʼt the best, it wonʼt stop Brits from making the most of every day of sunshine. Al fresco events, whether they are team days out, family fun days, festivals or company picnics can generate a lot of catering waste. Thankfully, our good friends at Firebrand Promotions can help. The company has a range of compostable branded cups as well as many other compostable catering items. Using the bio-plastic Polylactic Acid (PLA), Firebrand has a growing range of compostable products. PLA is derived from plant sugars such as corn starch, cassava, sugar cane or sugar beet. The PLA cups are certified compostable, which means that the product can break down in under 12 weeks in industrial composting conditions. The cups are plain clear standard-width cups and are perfect for cold beverages, fruit portions or desserts. They come in a range of sizes (9oz, 12oz, 16oz, 20oz). To accompany the cups, Firebrand produces eco-friendly straws that can be produced in a range of colourful designs.

A Eco products

One of the most popular eco products in recent years has been the canvas or cotton tote bag. I donʼt know about you, but Iʼve just totted mine up and, without being morbid, Iʼm not going to live long enough to see the benefit of all of them. So, itʼs great to see some alternative products coming to the market. Plant-based product company Sow Easy, is known for its seedsticks, which are a great way of spreading the green- fingered gospel. It claims that its seeded products not only encourage flower and herb planting, but help deter consumers from plastic-based promotional products.

The company has even introduced solar panels as a means of powering its UK-based factory, while office staff navigate the web on Ecosia, known as the search engine that plants trees in Africa and South America. Sow Easyʼs latest product lets promoters be almost as virtuous by cutting down on paper waste. Its branded seeded wristbands can be used as the guarantee of entry to festivals,

t this time in 2018 we were just starting to enjoy one of the best unbroken stretches of great weather that I can remember. This year ainʼt looking so hot,

sporting events and more. Theyʼre more convenient than a loose ticket, and once attendees go home, theyʼll be able to remember the event via a plant that grows from their wristband.

Treasure and trash Itʼs amazing how one personʼs trash can be anotherʼs treasure, or in this case, promotional branding device. Anyone who has noticed how fat their wallet or purse gets with crumpled receipts will be aware of how this seemingly innocuous collection of paper can build up. Well, now thereʼs a way that itʼs being given a second life. Apparently, there are about 11.2 billion receipts printed in the UK each year – thatʼs quite a till roll. Merchandise distributor, Allwag Promotional Merchandise notes that its notebooks made using recycled till receipts are proving extremely popular. The eco-friendly printed notebooks are from the Green and Good collection and come in A5 size with 75 sheets of white 80gsm recycled plain paper and a 170gsm recycled cover that is perfect bound. Lined paper is also available on request.

Fluid Branding’s sun block

Itʼs the perfect size to keep in your pocket, as is a product from Fluid Branding. As you should know, you can become sunburned even on cloudy days – like today, boo! The ultimate protection against the summer and winter sun comes as a pocket sized jar of total sun block.

This water resistant, fragrance-free non-greasy formula sun block helps protect sensitive areas such as lips, eyes, ears and nose. It comes in a clear round jar with a white cap. Another company that helps us look after ourselves is Manchester-based Bio Laboratories. It is well known for its extensive range of health and wellbeing products and has now introduced a collection of first aid kits that are available to suit all budgets.
