Focus on College Kit A trend with no expiration date

It is thought that leavers hoodies first originated in the USA to enhance school spirit. The concept is now common place within schools, colleges and universities. But why should you jump on the leavers hoodies bandwagon? Here Teri-Louise Deegan, marketing executive at Prestige Leisure, tells all.

L

eavers hoodies is a trend which is massively on the increase. While many of the other collegiate trends adopted from our American counterparts have bypassed learning life and made their way straight to retail – letterman jackets, varsity jackets et al – the leavers hoodie is rapidly becoming a rite of passage in the Great British school experience. Every year, more and more university campuses during freshers week are awash with multicoloured hoodies inscribed with ingenious sixth form nicknames, a testament to the fact that it's a trend with no expiration date. Concomitant to this is the prospective return on investment for undertaking these orders, which is prolific. There will always be school leavers so the potential to secure recurring orders year after year is truly tangible. Studies have also shown that the number of students staying on at school to sixth form is increasing year on year, so the potential for the orders themselves to grow in size is also apparent.

Plethora of products There is also a plethora of products within our industry perfectly suited for this sector of the market.

Hoodies such as the JH001 College Hoodie from Just Hoods by AWDis, which is competitively

priced and excellent quality, will become firm favourites and will quickly

establish themselves as the hoodie of choice. This creates faith and belief in the product and in the service, and so helps to generate future demand. Moreover, there is an

opportunity to cash in on the emotional dimension. Itʼs proven that people are willing to pay more for something in which is perceived as having high sentimental value and leavers hoodies have become a significant feature on the totem pole of adolescence. They are one of the few items who journey on into the minefield of post-school life, as they provide that connection to happy, safe and surer times.

Other offerings With regards to other

offerings suited for the college and university market, I would urge decorators to consider accessories and ancillaries. In the US, college students attend classes decked out in school branded regalia daily, but that tradition never transpired here in the UK. People go to college and university wearing regular clothing, so my advice would be to target products in which students need to support them in their scholarly pursuits.

Backpacks and stationary are a great way to break into this market, offering low key personalised items which are more suited to the student market.

There will always be school leavers so the potential to secure recurring orders year after year is truly tangible.
