Schoolwear Show Preview

and diversify their offer. It also brings the schoolwear industry together in one place, giving retailers and suppliers valuable time to build relationships and exchange ideas.

What seminar topics will be included at the show? The seminar programme will again be tailored to independent retailers, schoolwear suppliers and other industry professionals.

Legislation and its practical implications will be an important area of discussion. We also expect the programme to cover wider issues affecting retailers, including business performance, changing consumer behaviour and opportunities to develop and diversify their businesses. As in previous years, the aim is to provide practical insight that visitors can take away and apply within their own businesses.

What items other than uniforms will be on display? Footwear continues to be an interesting area, particularly as retailers look for opportunities to diversify their offer and increase the number of categories they can provide to families.

There is also continued interest in sportswear, outerwear and accessories. Retailers are increasingly looking at complementary products that sit naturally alongside their core school uniform offer and can help them become more of a one-stop shop for parents.

Visitors can also expect to see developments in areas such as decoration, technology and services designed to help retailers run their businesses more efficiently.

What is the current feel around the schoolwear industry?

There is understandably a lot of discussion around the changes facing the sector. The new school uniform legislation will be a significant backdrop this year as retailers, suppliers and schools adapt to the changes coming into

effect from September.

There will undoubtedly be challenges, but also opportunities for businesses to review their ranges, work more closely with schools and consider how they can continue to offer parents quality, value and choice. Alongside legislation, wider pressures around costs and changing consumer expectations continue to be important topics for retailers.

How far do you think the adjustments quoted in the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Act will affect discussions over the event? The legislation will clearly be one of the biggest issues facing the sector this year, and we expect it to feature prominently throughout the show.

It provides an important opportunity for retailers and suppliers to discuss what the changes mean in practice, ask questions, share experiences and understand how others are approaching them. The Schoolwear Association has also been working hard to keep the industry informed and guide members, so its involvement at this year’s show will be particularly important.

How much do you think it will have an impact on the industry?
